what ppm levels of house water is good for growing

Well the lower the better. Mine is 97 ppm, but I don't think it maters much as long as its not like 300 or more. Thats some nasty water if it is.

Hard water is just more calcium and magnesium And other minarals. Gordo is correct the lower the better. mines running around 40 ppm. A friend down the mountain is running 190 ppm and his plants are doing fine.

I don't believe that form of cal mag is in a plant useable form. It would need to be broken down by beneficials before the plant can consume it.
 
I do believe that calcium and magnesium that are in the water supply are available to the plant. They are dissolved solids, which if removed in a reverse osmosis process, need to be replaced with cal-mag. Maybe I need to learn something new here. I am always willing to learn.
 
Anything over 300 PPM is really hard water, though honestly I've seen people get great results with 350+ PPM tap water so it's not necessarily a death sentence. If it's under 200 PPM your water is better than average, and under 100 PPM is really good!
