I've been curing my auto flower for about 3 weeks now and I'm not noticing any smell difference or change from the fresh hay smell. One of my auto flowers smells sweet when I crack the lids to the mason jars but when in the curing process should the smell change to smelling like good buds again. I'm using quart size mason jars with brovida 62 percent humidity. I open them now every week instead of once a day. Thanks in advance for any advise.

One thing to note I learned from reading the informative articles here is "Do Not Use Bovida during the Drying Process", because it doesn't work very well... instead dry your bud, and then after a month to three months later when its dried and curing... then add the Boveda packet... and when I did this one my buds tasted better, two they smell better and the problem you are having also were fixed for me... and the other thing was the potency got better too.The only way to become the a good at anything is to read about it and learn all you can about it, and if it's something you love why not become an expert in it? The best place for anyone to start is at the beginning and make sure we didn't overlook anything, so let's go back to the basics.

I dried my buds in a dark room for about 7 to 10 days and put them in jars. I opened them daily for a week and once they stayed at 62 percent from the hydrometer then I added the bovida but they stayed smelling like hay for a while before that. How long does it uselly take for the hay smell to disappear when curing?

In agreement with that ...wait til you are cured before adding packs. Do you know your humidity in your jars? Hygrometer?Indoor- Coco coir & Perlite - 5 gal Smart pots

Why Do Growers Dry & Cure Buds After Harvest?
Here’s what drying and curing cannabis properly does for you...
Breaks down chlorophyll and dramatically improves taste / smoothness of buds
Gets rid of the unpleasant “fresh hay” or “cut grass” smell which is common on newly harvested buds

When it comes to the harvest and "Drying" most people really believe it ends when your buds reach the humidity level you think they need to be at and then DONE... buds to smoke, Problem is it doesn't work that way and believe me there is as much to drying and curing as their seems to be to growing a plant, but the more you know the better the buds will be. I push to get my humidity down to 40% in drying myself, then I put them into mason jars and do the daily/weekly pop the lid and let it breathe for an hour and reseal it until I really get the humidity down... Then it takes about 3-months once I get it down to where I keep an eye on the humidity inside each jar and then I open it and drop in a Boveda packet or two depending on the size I bought and then I give them another month of curing...Believe me I know nobody wants to wait that long to smoke some buds, so not all the jars may make it to that point for some people and that's fine you will still get high and enjoy some great buds. However the buds that make it to 4-6 months compared to the fresh buds you have that just dried even of the same clones there is a serious difference in the smoke you are enjoying. I read some place from some trusted source that bud should actually cure 1-YEAR to be at its best potency, taste, etc... All in all I actually don't know, but was willing to debate and test that claim and I can tell you this... WOW I wasn't complaining when we put that question to the test.
Here is what I can honestly say about our Test/Trial on the 1-Year cure... the bud was potent in the smell, it got Boveia at 3-months and moved to a dark place to be left alone undisturbed for the rest of the time once the burping of the jar was completed. We compared the same mother plant clones which have stayed the same in potency and have been staying to the same nutrients, etc... so we feel confident in our results, and in the end... Opening the other newer jars (fresher buds) there was some nice smell, you opened it got a whiff and stuck your nose in there to get a good smell of it. The 1-year old jar, you opened the lid and it smelled up the entire room and surrounding rooms with its potency of the smell, made me think of a hot car with the new air freshener in it for the potency of it. When it came to the smoothness, the newer buds were okay for smoothness you coughed here and there... but nothing horrible... the 1-year old stuff however when down like air, you couldn't even feel it burning your throat or lungs, but the hits OMG allowed you to really take in much bigger hits without any issue getting it all back out without coughing became the trick. When it came to the high effects, again we noted a serious difference it seemed much more intense as well.
Why does any of this really matter? Because when you really start getting into learning about Drying and Curing you will learn some aspects of how some things inside the buds need to lose water for them to change into something else, and thus that is why cannabis must dry out to a certain percentage and then Cure in order for the buds to become more potent in the ways you are looking for. In the end I ended up learning so much that I did some more experiments to see if the drying and curing process would in effect change taste, flavor and potency depending on the aspects of curing and drying... and sure enough buds off the same plant, dried and cured in different ways were all believed to be different strains all grown by different various people, and couldn't believe it was all bud from one plant at one harvesting. So here is a good place for you to start learning about Drying and Curing may it help you get started learning more on these topics:

This is my 3rd grow and trying to perfect the drying and curing. The first two grows I didn't pay much attention to the drying and curing to get it to the point I could smoke it. I'm noticing that this time I'm following the steps mentioned and I'm noticing a major difference in taste, smell, and affect. This time when I crack the lids they are starting to smell sweet and it's about 4 weeks into curing. Hoping soon it will smell like weed. One of my auto flowers is blueberry and can't wait for that taste to come through to the buds. It seems like 50 percent of growing process is drying and curing which from what I'm reading could take 6 months to year for a proper cure before they are ready, does that sound correct??

Hey Rock, welcome to the forum!!! It sounds to me like you've done everything correctly, but it's weird that you still smell the grassy smell. I have folowed the GWE tutorials on dry and cure as you have; the only thing I would recommend would be to keep opening them daily, jiggle them gently, get fresh air in there, and let them keep curing. I have not kept a journal on the way the aroma changes, but it sure changes over a three-month period!!
Give them fresh air daily. Hope it helps.

Apologies if you mentioned this already but if it was harvested too early this might happen too. My last harvest(chopped too early) 3 weeks into curing I dumped the whole thing in open tray overnight and jarred it all in the am. It helped with grassy smell.

How long should I keep the lid open

aaaaah curing. So happy to be knocking on it's door.
Thanks for all the delicious info peeps.Originally posted by 420n808
If you are new to growing, the first time you see the balls, you'll never forget the sight. You will know M-F from that point on.
Oh my days, now that this has happened to me... SO TRUE!!!

Thanks everyone for the helpful advice. I followed the guide too but I know now it's going to be maybe a few more grows before I understand how my environment works for my plants from seed to curing. I'll give the opening the jars once a day for a week and see if that helps improve the smell. I've learned what doesn't work lol. These plants I actually let go two weeks longer into harvest, the buds started showing cool colors since I started giving it cooler temps at night a week before cutting down. I also noticed that out of the 3 plants one was ripe and fat buds and smelled great. I took that one down and started the drying process which I extended out to 1 weeks. I trimmed all the fan leaves and most of the sugar leafs because the humidity was very high. At 3 days later I cut down the second and did the same process. The 3rd still had a few undeveloped colas so I let that go for another week longer and they fattened right up. During the drying process about 7 days later for each plant the top colas were getting brittle while the lower branches were still wet to the touch. So I jarred the buds that were getting crispy on the outside but I didn't close the jars and just left them open. Once all the buds felt dry on the outside I started the mason jar once a day and popped the lids. I was worried of ruining it so I threw bovadia packs and opening them once a day with bovida for a week. Hydrometer has been reading 61% humidity now and the lids are closed the jars are in a dark cool area.
I'm enjoying the journey and appreciate the help

Here's how I did it last time, at around week 2 or 3 I just compared in my fingers the feeling of my buds to dispensary buds. It gave me an idea of where I was at in the curing, I'm very tactile in general.
I only use a small hygrometer, one per jar, and aim at bringing down the rh 1 or 2 % every 2-3 days to 61% at the end of cure however long it might take. Example, on Monday I'm at 68%, I leave the jar open overnight, lid back on Tuesday am, Tuesday night I'm at 66%, I burp it, burp again Wednesday am, Wednesday evening I'm at 65%, keep on burping till 63% etc...as slow and as precise as possible is the trick. When I'm at 61% I combine all the buds in quart mason jars, leaving only a little space at the top. Hygrometer remains at the bottom for another few weeks as a precaution. I keep the jars in a drawer and just froze up 2 jars harvested on 4/1.
Damn I rambled!!! Sour diesel....
Sorry about that! I thought I was on camera!😂😂😂

I love this site, I keep reading and finding out all kinds of awesome examples on grow weed easy. I've read some articles probably 10 times lol. Great stuff thank you

I agree with you Rockmyhandle, I can honestly tell you I have a library of books, a great list of informational sources online, and of everything I have learned and read this is simply hands down the best site of informational resources to take anyone from a newbie to an expert for 100% FREE! Which is sad since before I came here, I was working at a place like this teaching others to grow, but the company I worked for charged (A LOT OF) $$$ just to teach newbies the basics, and then if you wanted to learn something outside the basics "Shhh... we don't talk about that"... Hence why when I found this site I cut all ties with the other place, because I really think so highly of this site teaching everyone, everything for 100% free to make us all better growers.
If you didn't sign up for the Newsletter from NebulaHaze, I'd encourage you to check it out... not sure where on this site I signed up for it at, but it comes once a week and its always informative, detailed and to the point like the articles, the one piece of email I do look forward to every week.Last edited by PigSquishy; 05-24-2017, 09:10 PM.
