    I haven't but I have heard of switching from HPS to MH in the last two weeks of flower.

    I've never used anything except HPS for the whole grow so take the next couple of points with a grain of salt as I may be wrong but...

    I'm pretty sure MH put out UV-B (?) like the sun and the plants create more stickiness to help protect the buds.
    I think LEC also put out UV as well (I could be wrong)

      So basically they switch to get more trichs the last few weeks? I've never heard of tht but nice info to check out and plz let me no if I'm wrong but mh prompts plants to grow short and HPs to grow tall? I just wondering why is HP's better besides the fact tht it imitates natural harvest time like. I feel like alot off ppl must have tried this alrdy and thts why it's always said to use hps for flower I just tried a new Technic tht did work out well for me so I think it will be a few harvests before I experiment again kinda hopeing soneone has done it and can save me a mistake

    hey St.buds , if i understood correctly this article that Nebula wrote, it's not just that HPS helps plants grow tall but that the HPS has more red and yellow (which is what flowers use most of) and that MH puts out more of blue/bluewhite which is what stems and foliage need, i.e., that's why it's used for veg stage. but again that's what i took from it. oh, and the info about UV light and how it's hypothesized that UV brings out the trichs bc trichs are kinda like "sunscreen" for plants is in there too.

    What do I need to know about the color spectrum of light when growing marijuana indoors? Blue light delivers more squat growth, yellow light leads to stretchier growth and...

      well that worked out well. seriously tho i found it super helpful but i have definitely gone back to it again and again depending on where i'm at in my grow....or if i'm lookin' at buyin' a new light

    You can definitely flower plants under a MH, but you will generally end up with smaller yields than if you used the same size HPS because an HPS bulb produces 25-40% more light (depending on the wattage/size of the light) for the same amount of electricity. All that extra light from an HPS results in more buds. The yellowish-red color of the HPS light also imitates the fall sun and there's evidence it may help promote flowering. Some growers believe using an MH in flowering increases quality, especially the last few weeks, though I haven't met enough growers who do it to be able to really verify that. I do believe that a lot of the best light from an MH light (specifically the UV rays) get lost if you use a glass hood, because the glass filters out some of the light.

    If you want a "hybrid" of the two types, the LEC grow lights are basically a Metal Halide light that's been made with a ceramic arc tube like an HPS, and sold in a fixture that typically doesn't have a glass hood. An LEC is much more electrically efficient than a standard MH, and produces UV rays like an MH (in fact even more than an MH). The growers in this forum have been getting really great results with them as an alternative to HPS or LEDs!

    I plan to use BOTH a 400 watt 10K MH for vege. and then a 600 watt HPS for finish (Just my experiment).

    I use a 400w MH for my Veg Stage and a 400w HPS for flower. I have never heard of someone using MH during flower because its color spectrum is for veg growth. Whenever i switch from MH to HPS i Notice a huge difference in type of growth, will notice many bud spots starting within days. You could use the MH for flower stage im sure but like someone said above, the yields might not be as good.

    So basically: MH=Growth
    HPS=Flower
