  • Ozbud's second grow - Auto Afghan Kush Ryder by World of Seeds

    Hello GWE family.

The time is finally here, I got my germination underway a few days ago and 3/5 seeds have already popped as of last night, I haven't yet checked them this morning.

    Here's the genetics I'm working with http://www.worldofseeds.eu/wos_en/af...ush-ryder.html

For those of you who don't want to follow the link/can't be bothered here's the rundown:
    Strain: Auto Afghan Kush Ryder
    Breeder: World of seeds
    Seedbank: Seedsman
    Feminised: Yes
    THC: 22%
    Height: 40-80cm
    Maturation 45-55 days
    Yield: 350-450g per m2

Afghan Kush Ryder is a cross between Afghan Kush and Ruderalis.

Our Afghan Kush comes from Kush strains with 100% Indica genes cultivated in a small area in the Hindu Kush mountains in Northern Pakistan.

This cross is a good example of Cannabis Ruderalis, which, over the generations, has been crossed and re-crossed to produce a strain with Indica characteristics and autoflowering genetic programming of Ruderalis. Afghan Kush Ryder can be grown indoors or outside and can reach between 40-80cm or even higher. The effect is extremely potent, so relaxing that it’s almost narcotic, which is why the medicinal value is so high.

The taste and aroma, like its predecessor, Afghan Kush, evoke the best very aromatic Afghan hash. As flowering does not depend on the photoperiod, she can be grown at any time of the year although yields improve the better the environmental conditions.

More to come shortly, quick bong break & I'll be back with some more info on the goals for this grow, the process so far and a few pictures as well.

I have been very impressed with WOS in the past but so far AKR not so great. I put them in soil as usual and it took 7 days to come up. They came up very puny and weak. All five I planted came up and are starting to grow but slowly. Takes them extra week to get going when they come up weak. I have Chem Dog next to them everything the same and they came up strong.

Do you have the auto or photo version of AKR? First one of mine popped some time between 2-2.5 days (I only check them twice a day)

Ok, lets start with my goals for this grow:

    1. Reduce power consumption

    2. Reduce noise

    3. Eliminate odors

    4. Improve bud quality

Last grow I used a DIY cupboard which did a decent job but this time around I've got a proper tent and exhaust system and stuff to address noise and smell issues. They didn't bother me but to help keep the mrs happy and to increase grow security I thought I might as well do it properly. The new toys were shipped Wednesday so I'll post more about them, including photos when it all arrives.

Due to the better quality/efficiency of my new toys I have managed to save 55W of power. Not a huge amount but still a 7% drop in electricity consumption.

Bud quality was good last time, I'm just hoping to improve on density & appearance more than potency this time around. I'll be using a PK flowering supplement as well as humic acids to hopefully get some good results and might try a full wet trim this time around instead of just removing the fan leaves and major trim then trying to tidy it all up once dried.

      Substrate

I use Nutrifield Coco Mega Bricks from the local store with no amendments eg Perlite.

I'm in the process of rehydrating a brick for the first 3 babies. 25L/6.6Gal tap water at 25C/77F and adjusted to pH 6.0. Saoked for 5 minutes, I broke up as much as I could by hand and have left it to soak for a while in a new, clean 60L bin.

Will be a too hard to tell since I'm using so many new supplements. It's a shame that it doesn't need to be introduced until week 2 as I had a bit of heat earlier on in the grow. They're all doing better now with healthy new growth but I don't know if that's due to Silica, one of the other numerous things in the other supplements like sea kelp extracts and such or from environmental changes like raising the light 2 inches or adding a second passive intake.

Still trying to dial in my new setup and starting a grow in early Autumn, not in winter like last year.
Also in the future I need to stop and take things into consideration like a 100% indica x ruderalis is going to be more heat sensitive than a sativa dominant plant.

10am - Put 5 AKR seeds in a shot glass of 25C/77F tap water (comes out at pH 6.6) to soak

12.30pm - Rehydrated 5 Jiffy pellets using 25C/77F tap water, not pH adjusted. Gently squeezed out excess water & planted seeds about 10mm deep.
Put Jiffy pellets in their tray, in a seedling dome. Dome sitting on top of a heat mat with a low intensity fluro for clones sitting on top of the dome. There's a thermostat probe in the dome, when the temp in dome gets to 26C/78.8F the heat mat turns off, if the temp goes above 26C/78.8F then a fan turns on and blows cool air against the outside of the dome until it goes back below the set temp.

Germination setup is pretty messy but to be honest I was just too lazy to do it nice and neat. I'll be setting up the HPS in this cupboard and transplanting the sprouted seeds today (26/3) anyway. The germination dome will go somewhere else if the other two haven't sprouted by the end of the day

10am - Rehydrated Coco brick as above.

That brings me up to date so far I think. Any questions, comments, suggestions or criticism welcome throughout the grow. I'll be posting updates for the whole grow in this thread, I hope you all come along for the ride. Enjoy!

Noon - gave 2ml tap water to each of the Jiffy pellets & realized I almost forgot the most important picture so far, here are the new babies. Will be going under HPS today.

I set up the cupboard over the afternoon.

7pm started transplanting the 3 sprouted seeds into 290mm diameter pots, I noticed a forth has a bit of root out of the Jiffy pellet, hopefully it breaks the surface soon.
7.20pm Turned everything on in the cupboard, light at 3' for the first night and I'll drop it down tomorrow.

Looking good OZ. I love all the detail.

I may go back to jiffy pellets for germ. My first Sour Bubbly Auto seed hasn't popped after more than a week so I pulled another last night.

3/5 of mine had sprouted within 4 days and then a 4th followed one day later. I threw the 5th away after 7 days as I only planned to grow the best 3 to harvest anyway

I did that very strain for my first plants in 35 years and they came out alright but could have been better, I was aiming for a ph of 6.5 when it should have been 6.0 so I fought one issue after another. But all in all the medicine was alright, especially for the first grow.

Awesome. Good to hear others here have grown this strain. There's not much online in the way of journals or grow/smoke reports for this strain but it looks good on paper

                27/3/2017

9am - Cupboard has been running for 14 hours now, outside temps have been as low as 13C/55.4F ambient temp in cupboard has ranged from 22C/71.6F - 25C/77F. Outside temps today are supposed to reach 26C/78.8F so I'll see how I go. Cooling weather for the rest of the week here.

Mrs was already complaining about the noise from the cupboard last night, hoping the new tent & fans get here soon.

I took a couple of photos this morning, the first one is of the cupboard when I first opened it for the morning, it's a bit messy with various buckets & jars of water around to keep humidity up while the babies are so small but that's the same layout I used last grow. Dropped the light from 90cm/35" to 80cm/31" and will continue to lower until it's about 18" as long as temps are under control.

I also took individual photos of the the transplanted seedlings, they're all looking good.

Transplanted seedlings all got 200ml of pH 6 water. Watered in circles ranging from 1-3 inches from the stem of seedlings. Basically a donut shape with the donut hole being where the seedling is

4th Seedling has emerged as well, right on the top edge of Jiffy Pellet, not in the centre where the seed was placed lol. The seedling dome I decided to place on the top shelf of the cupboard so it gets heat and low light from the cupboard and no longer needs the heat mat.

Tent + other new toys arrived at about 1.30pm, no time to put it together before work so that's a job for tomorrow morning.

                  28/3/2017 Day 3.

Well today is an exciting day, I finally get to play with all my new toys. The only things I didn't replace were the ballast, reflector & bulb.

Here's what I'm now working with:
                  Tent: Gorilla 2x4
                  Light: 600W HPS
                  Fan: 6" Hyper fan
Climate control: Hyper thermostat fan speed controller
                  Filter: Can GT600
                  Silencer: Sile-X 6" solid
                  Ducting: Insulated
                  Air circulation: 2x 6" fans

Took me a couple of hours to put it all together and figure out where I was going to place everything. Trickier than I thought to get a fan & duct silencer in a 2x4 tent with enough room for a carbon filter in flowering & still hang my light centrally. Didn't help that I bought a big enough fan/filter to suit a 4x4 whenever I eventually upgrade again. Got there in the end though and it all paid off. Setup is a lot quieter, mrs is happier and I'm sure the babies love their new home.

Transplanted the 4th seedling into her new pot & dropped the light down to 50cm/19.7" when I put it in the new tent. Biggest first seedling is showing the first tips of what will become the first multi blade leaves, think it might be time for a mild feed tomorrow since I'm in coco.

May still make a few adjustments on the tent layout but it's going well so far and holding temps well.

I'll take some pics of the new tent in a sec and come back and edit the post to add them in.

No I'm in the far south east off the mainland so I'm all safe. Got a mate that lives where it got directly hit, he's safe and beginning cleanup.

OzBud Just curious, how do you have the exhaust fan attached to the tent? I've found that they're a bit quieter if you hang the exhaust fan directly from the top of the tent from one of the poles with something that helps absorb vibration (like bungee cord, nylon rope, etc). The idea is for the fan to independently hang from something stretchy as opposed to be resting on anything. It looks like it may already be the case in your tent, but I just thought I'd double check. I just came across this journal and now I'm subscribed! Your plants look great!

                    Thanks for stopping by Nebula
The fan is in the tent, it's just completely surrounded by insulated ducting to minimise noise so it can't actually be seen. The tent is in a corner with walls along the back and right side (there's a 1' gap on the right though)

There's the end of the ducting in the tent, which is attached to and covering the fan, the fan is directly attached to the solid silencer on the right but there's a 4" piece of ducting covering the outflow side of the fan and the join to the silencer, the silencer then goes to more ducting which comes out of the right side of the tent and up over the roof towards the left side away from the intake on the bottom right side. I didn't exhaust out the left because that side faces out where the garage door opens and would be visible, but I can hide the duct on top and still have the warm air going towards the window away from the intake.

All the ventilation stuff is hanging on 1/2" heavy duty bungee cords to minimise noise/vibration. Can't hear anything outside the room unless the fan speed goes above minimum. My old setup sounded like a dryer was on 24/7!

Thanks for the compliment on the plants, they're loving life so far and are coming along nicely from the photos 3 days ago. next photos I'll probably post about day 7

                    No worries.
The 6" still makes a reasonable noise on full speed if things start warming up and the room the tent is in isn't much cooler than the tent temp.
Had a few warm days & nights here and it's been running full speed at times, but then at idle speed when temps are nice and cool.
Coming into winter the 6" will do great, to keep things quieter in the warmer months I think an 8" would be better but it would move too much air in winter here. Overkill for a 2x4 tent but it shouldn't ever need to go much above idle speed unless someone lives in a pretty hot climate

I hear ya. I'm moving into the hot and HUMID time. After last summer I'm transitioning to LED's and a larger tent for flowering. The new tent is 2.1 meters tall this time. I'm thinking the extra height will help keep the heat off the plants.... and allow more room for big, tall colas

a larger space also takes more heat to warm it up
