Your friend must've had a rollercoaster of emotions from that whole ordeal. It's a harsh reminder of how different laws can be from state to state, especially when it comes to cannabis. Honestly, I totally get your approach of not carrying anything when crossing state lines. It's just not worth the risk. I mean, getting caught up in a situation like that can really mess up your life. If you're ever in need of something to help relax on your travels, maybe consider checking out some e-cigarettes. They're legal pretty much everywhere, and there are some great options out there. I've had a good experience with this store called https://esix9.com. Might be worth a look!

I grew up in Texas through grade 9 and in the early 70's the Sheriff came into the school to tell us about drugs. They passed a tray around with a couple of pills and 3 joints on it, when the tray made it back to the Sheriff most of the stuff was gone. So he said I am going to pass this tray around again and no questions asked but if everything isnt back on the tray we will search everyone before they leave.
When the try made it back to him there were 6 joints and more pills than when it started. I think people were worried about getting frisked and them finding it so they dumped it. The Sheriff was so pissed he couldnt continue

I'm never going back to Texas or driving through it. I'll try and avoid the other red states as well.
Kinda like cross country hop scotch. Only if you step in the wrong square you go to jail.
