From the pictures I would say your PH is off.
.What is the level when you water and after the nutrients are in and mixed?

I grow in coco coir in Ebb & Flow systems and watering the bottom half of the bags works great. I think that is how the Autopots work also...

Ask your friend to bring some PH up and PH down solution also just in case
