I have a small grow box (2X2X5), soil and a total of 288 watt CFL and learning to increase yeilds. Two questions. I only top once early, but have what I assume are secondary colas because they develope below the two colas where topped. These "secondary" colas go on to develope as well as the main colas (see photo). How are these different from colas on plants that are topped more than once? Second. I have tried my hand at defoliating this grow and man did it produce a bushy, low plant. Most of what I have read says to remove fan leaves only but I have small off shots that won't produce much. I did remove some of these but can see now that I should have removed more. Will total yield be more with less colas that don't compete with the stragglers?

The more you top the more bushier and fatter it gets..should have less stretch as a result. Should...
The more under bud you remove the more energy the plants put towards main tops....

The plant will determine where it will devote its energy. You can influence this through the various training methods on the site. The colas are all the same for all intents and purposes, like I said the plant will do the work, you simply set the stage.
The stragglers you mention, commonly referred to as larf, do rob the associated cola of some energy that could be used to fatten up the crowns. I am not aware of any way to quantify this. I usually let them go and just toss the larf in my extract pile.
