PH water before or after aerating ??

    PH water before or after aerating ??

    Hi all ,
    Im growing in Coco/perlite, and hand watering.
    I like to use a small fountain pump to add oxygen to my water before I use it.
    Normally I fill a 5G bucket from the tap one day in advance of use and let it sit for 24hours.
    About 1-2 hours before I water the garden, I PH that water after all additives are in, then I drop the pump in and have it run in the bucket for an hour or 2.

    Is this the right time to PH? or should I adjust it after the aeration, right before I water ?

    Any thoughts and comments are appreciated, thank you

    The carbon dioxide in the air will reduce the pH of the water. I would pH it after bubbling. If you measure it both before and after bubbling then you can see if it is a significant change or not. Your additives may have a buffering affect that minimizes the pH change.

      Yes and oxygen will rise ph too, unless your water has been sitting for long and the oxygen is low already aerating will maintain a stable ph. If the water has been sitting for a couple of days the ph may rise a few decimals after aerating. If you add nutrients or really anything that rises the ppm/Ec of the solution then gas exchange won’t be enough to mess with the ph

    Thank you for the tips.
    It sounds like the effect is not too large, but I will try more testing to see the change before and after. The real challenge is to find time to do the things I want to do, and not have to do.

    I was also curious how fast it changes when you pull it from the tap, when it’s quite aerated, then get distracted or spend an hour watering.
    Would the drift in that time be significant for the plants?
    I will try to test that too and post if I can.

      Nope, sitting water is measured in days not hours. A bucket left for two days can be aerated just by pouring into another bucket. Maybe a week old water You want to pour several times or put a bubbler for an hour or two

    you shouldn't need to aerate the water when growing in coir but it's a matter of personal preference. You can achieve the same results by simply stirring the water vigorously for a few minutes...no need for a pump or to wait an hour. Leaving the water sit over 24 hours isn't necessary either unless your water is coming from the tap that contains a lot of chlorine. In that case a few hours is enough to dissipate the chlorine as long at the lid to the container is left off.
    I hope there is an afterlife...there are a lot of friends and family I'd like to see again, one day.

      Ok thanks for more tips, I’ll take them all. sounds like I could be less concerned about this, and focus on my other issues.

        Proper PH levels should be the primary focus when watering. Both flushing and nutrient watering should have a PH of about 6.0 for Coir. A reminder to test the PH after mixing in nutrients and make sure you let it sit for a few minutes before testing. Vigorous mixing can affect the final PH reading

      Yes thx, I meant less concerned about the aeration. PH is my primary concern always.
      I do my best to test diligently , calibrating my crappy pen often, testing it carefully, and testing multiple times, as I save for something better.
      Seems to me with all the effort and expense we go through, trusting the farm to a 20$ tester is abit ‘um, dumb (but ya gotta start some where)

        Very true. Thats why i like paper pH strips. Even cheaper but more reliable.

      When you mix your water and nutes, do you mix only what you will use in one day, or is it ok to mix up a batch that will last several days to a week?

        Depending on the brand and line, hydro nutrients Made for reservoirs can last up to a week but most two part nutrients made for soil and coco contain calcium nitrate that can react with other nutrients and precipitate. Thats why they don't come all in one, solubles do, but they all reccomend no more than 48 hours after mixing

      You want to ph test the water at the beginning then treat it test again after gently shaking/stirring in ph correction solution if it’s correct then aerate over aerating pre ph test by over shaking in ph correction solution can alter the ph slightly

        Personally I wouldn’t bother with aeration, ph is king imo. If the ph is good the plants should be good 👍🏻
