    magnetic ballast caught fire

Hi...could anyone give some thoughts on what could have happened here...i went to check my grow room and found that 1 of the magnetic ballasts had some black charcoal looking burn mark on top of it...it was still functioning the lights were still on...could it just be dust finding its way into the ballast through the grate?...or maybe an insect crawled in there and got sizzled??...whats your guys thoughts please??...Thank-you...

Root cause analysis would require an inspection of the equipment. Have you ruled out a short circuit or an arch flash? Those are most common in electronic devices.
4x4 600w HID empty for summer
3x3 400w HID with Bruce Banner and Skywalker Kush
2x2 65w Quantum Board LED with 4 mother strains
running all simultaneously for a perpetual harvests.

if it was a sort circuit it wouldnt work...would it!??......not familiar with an arch flash but how does one determine that?...

Depends on what was closing the circuit. Could have been blown off when it happened and removed the short. Who knows. Hard to say exactly with out inspecting it.
Electricity can arch (or jump) to a point of less resistance. A flash is when a small explosion happens during this process.
Might not have flashed. Could have just arched.
      How old is this ballast?

I have many of these old heavy junkers that I like

these old ballasts have many some large capacitors that cause all types of hassles
the older the more they dry out, drop them they leak stinky heavy oil
the cause of many fires since weed first went under a HID

then if you didn't drop it ,,then it cracks with age and or heat in the early days the caps had to be replaced
but after the 60'S they used the fixed ones but at a reduced running time see above !
now replaced by digital ballasts that do need a ferret coil to reduce radio and tv inference

a good grower would be eyeballing an expensive HLG LED ARRAY

    good luck
