I simmer mine in a large pot of water for 15 minutes, rinse them with warm water and then let dry out naturally on a paper towel lined cookie sheet. The simmering water will kill any pathogens hiding in the small crevices and also does a nice job of dissolving any accumulation of salts. I’ve been doing this with the same batch of hydroton for 3 years and it’s worked for me.
Failure is an opportunity for improvement!!

This is the method I have been using as well. Simmer for 10-15 mins and then rinse and dry. Reused several times already.

I throw them in a 5% solution of hydrogen peroxide, putting something on top to keep them submerged, and then rinse them the next day, and let them dry before using, the peroxide breaks down into water and oxygen so there's no residue
