Hi all,
Tent is empty right now but we're looking forward to our next indoor grow in the Spring. We are now considering Coco Coir in hopes that gnats are less of a problem than our soil grows. It will be nice to try a new medium anyhow. Relative newbies with three successful soil grows to date but each grow was plagued by fungus gnats. We researched and applied every piece of advice we could find but have never completed a grow without at least some gnats. We pre-treat the soil with Gnatrol, use yellow sticky cards, DE on top and let dry between waterings. We treat our soil throughout the grow stages by rotating between Azamax and Gnatrol, whether gnats are evident or not. Fortunately, we have always eliminated the gnats by half way through flower. The biggest issue is the lost potential during veg. I know gnats are considered less damaging than other pests but the larvae can really do a lot of damage during seedling and veg stages. Our first grow had gnats in the soil (a well known popular brand), but we were rookies and didn't notice until one of four seedlings started falling over. We ultimately lost that plant and the other three grew OK, but we fought gnats the whole grow.
Anyone have an experience like this and had better luck with Coco? I've read elsewhere that fungus gnats are usually less prevalent in Coco but some people still get them. What do you guys think?
thanks!
