Outdoor Grow - Slow Growth with Crossed Fingers

    Hi Everybody!
I just started checking in on the forum after taking some time away. It is nice to see people helping each other constantly on here. For myself, I used to grow indoors with a 3x3 setup with led and t5 lights with a lot of success. Recently, I have had to grow outside in ZONE 5 climate. Needless to say, I have come across a number of challenges that I wanted to share with anyone interested. The timings are approximate but I can see visually or developmentally, these plants are 2-3 weeks slower than what I am used to seeing in an indoor grow. I have also germinated Mephistero strains indoors in the past but did not get to complete them so I am sure that these differences are environmental and not strain/breeder specific.

    Here is my setup:
    Strains
Mephisto Auto Ghost Toof x 3
Mephisto Auto Forum Stomper (FREEBIE!) x 1

    Outdoor Grow Soil
    Pro-Mix BX
    CIL Compost with EW castings
    Happy Frog Bat Guano
Earthworm castings - both home composted and purchased
    Perlite

    Feeding
    Alaska Fish
    Bio Bizz Fish
    Bio Bloom
    Ground Kelp
    Grotek VitaMax
    Grotek Monster Bloom

    Week 0 to 3
The first 3 weeks of these were a bit stressful for me. The weather dropped to about 48 degrees farenheit in the evenings for these seedlings. The weather was not cooperating. Initially, I only planned to have one plant and to choose from the strongest of the two GTs that popped. Then as the weather warmed up on week 2 and week 3, I sprouted another Ghost Toof seed and then finally a Forum Stomper seed. My rationale was that, if these latter seeds avoided the cold then they will have a better start and possibly surpass the first two seeds in growth.

In comparison to growing indoors, the growth from the beginning was already very slow. The growth in the first 3 weeks was often observed in my indoor grows within the first week under a grow light. Currently, the plants are received a good amount of direct sunlight probably 10 hours daily. The growth has been steady and the nodes have been close together.

    Week 4 -6
On week 4, I transplanted the first two into a 5 gallon fabric pot and 3 gallon nursery pot which no hiccups. The slow growth continued after transplant and there was thankfully no more stunting. Probably 3 or 4 sets of leaves at this point for the first two plants and the younger plants are still sprouting. Still not a lot of stretch and mainly vertical growth with really close nodes. I decided to transplant the Forum Stomper plant after the leaves reached the edges of the smaller pot closer to the end of week 4.

I saw early signs of pre-flowers on the older GTs. I transplanted the final Ghost Toof seed and shocked it. I did not dig the hole deep enough when preparing the new pot and the soil around the roots was really loose. I almost gave up at this point because I knew that the plant would be effected by the move. It was literally only 2/3 into the dirt and I knew it was irreversible at this point. Bad prep and rushing on my part. The next day, none of the leaves were responding to sunlight, but the day after, the higher leaves began to respond. On this week I decided to LST my plants. I am used to having longer branches to work with for LSTing but from how the plant was growing, it looked like vegging would not continue for much longer. So I am experimenting with this training, in the longer plants I staked them at an angle. For the forum stomper I am bending it down with only a few nodes developed.

    Lessons So Far
    Drainage
For some reason when I was mixing my soil, I forgot how important adding more perlite to the soil is. Especially when adding very dense, rich, moisture retaining compost. This was my first mistake and I can tell by how long it takes for the soil to dry up to my knuckle even in hot weather. I am watering once a week when I prefer to be able to water 2 or 3 times a week. In combination with rain, it has been more critical to get in the nutes that I want to feed during rainings or all ready for the single watering each week. Also the density is counter productive to root development.

    Training
Training these has been strange because of the short height and slow growth. Having a lot of wind recently, it may have been good to stake the main stem as I can see relative to the height, the plants have put significant amount of energy in stabilizing with a thicker mainstem. In comparison to an indoor grow, I would likely see this stem thickness with more height. Indoor plants do not have the same intensity of wind to deal with, so they are able to use that for growth instead of girth I reckon.

    Timing
I started these as early as I could really. But with the growth and development being 2/3 weeks behind what I am used to seeing, I wondering if they will finish in time before the Fall comes. I say that development is slow mainly because of lack of height, lack of stretching and late signs of pre-flowers I imagine it will not be an option to harvest as late as October because of the drop in temperature. The Summer will be intense but very short. So if other growers are giving this 14 weeks to finish, I imagine I will need a couple more at least.

    Anaerobic Compost Tea
I started trying to do this, but because of the delay in the soil drying it really sat out in the sun for longer than I liked maybe 3-4 days. Without an air pump I do not think this is a wise choice. So moving forward I am just going to mix things (fish, guano, castings, nutes, kelp, molasses.... ) when watering rathering than letting it stew.

In conclusion, this has been a tense experience for me. I definitely miss having an indoor setup - now I realize how much of a luxury it is to have control over temperature, light timings, light angles... unfortunately I do not have a choice right now but I am lucky for a lot of reasons too. My outdoor setup is not covered so I have long hours of sunlight. I actually did not know I would be able to grow again when I got rid of my tent and lights so regardless of what my yield is I should be thankful.

Thank you for reading I will update in a couple of weeks if not sooner!

Sounds like my grow this year with autos, i'm a first timer also outdoor autos. Most everything you did I did. To early start by a month for me. Nature fooled me with warm temps then cooled off for weeks. Lesson learned. Autos outdoors need in my opinion need a very healthy start indoors. I just harvested WW auto 95+ days and her sister will go 100days. All do to environment, photos are way more tolerant. My WW autos are 4ft, my GDP autos are less than 12" thick leaves very tight nodes green as heck no signs of growth or dying leafs. Just stalled and they are 65 days old. Autos outdoors takes some learning trial and error for me also. I'm going to keep growing them outdoors next year, just not so early.

yes I LST mine and topped 1 experimented . I have a greenhouse so oct. rains in Oregon I will drag my photos or autos in there for cover to finish. I believe you can do autos quicker outdoors that's what i'm shooting for. But I will continue to grow my photos grows also outdoors for the bigger yields. Good luck sounds like you learned, just grow them out chalk it up and you'll do better next grow. Peace

How do photos work outdoors? I would choose photo over autos but how/when do they flower?

Hi SoOrbudgal thanks for sharing about your experience. Which breeder are you using for your autos? I am curious about the superautos specifically the Dutch Passion XL WW for future grows. But as I realize how timing is so critical outdoors having an extending grow may not work for my setup, but it would work great with your greenhouse setup. Sounds like an awesome option to have especially when the weather cools down early in the fall. The growth of your GDP autos sounds similar to my plants currently, very short and very slow but also very healthy looking for now.

For training, I will also leave one plant not-LST ed. In the past I topped and fimmed under grow lights but the situation seems totally different now. I plucked off some leaves with some hesitance, one blocking some nodes I want to shoot out and also the lowest bud sights because in the past I just think that those do not grow particularly well. I will check out some of your other posts. Thank you for your insight!

I have purchased autos from fastbuds, newguy420(Nevada), seedman and others. I go for good genetics, breeders. These same seed banks I use for my fem. photo periods. I grow those mostly, autos are fairly new for me. Dutch Passion is great also. I am just up north of cali and I usually get photos to flower by end of aug. But sativas take me longer to finish so I like growing Indica strains in out door grows. White widow is fast for me have 2 photo of those 1 burnt cookie, 2 mama mia and 1 gorilla bomb. Bomb seeds is good. I was looking at my dwarf GDP autos earlier and thought hmmm BONZI Sure there are expensive seeds I no longer spend more than $7 for ea seed. I clone my photos for mid winter grows. I read this morning about the super autos, thing is always environmental fluxs could make them reg. speed. I will try them sometime but have plenty of seeds for now. OH and I go for fem. seeds on the photos and I've never had a male auto yet either.

Hi quietlybinary FlyingDutchPaddy has some DinaFem XXL WW going in hydro right now that's supposed to finish in around 80 days. I'm doing the same thing you are this summer, experimenting outside on the patio with some photos and gathering info from the outdoor growers here. If the opportunity presents itself, I think I'll try some autos outside next year. I'm in zone 3 with 99 days frost free, so one of those little plastic greenhouses is probably going to be required.

quietlybinary Photoperiod plants will go into flower once the season reaches a period of lasting darkness to induce flower. For me in California I'm looking at mid-August most likely. You can check by looking online at when the night hours have increased to ~12hr. Roughly each day after the 21 of June the days get shorter, and nights longer. Hence seasonal growing my bud! 😎

You also will want to look up your hardiness zone, which is what HappyDaze is mentioning saying that they are in Zone 3. It will give you an idea of the growing conditions that you have. If you wanna get crazy, you can have your soil tested or test it yourself to see what you need in it if you plan on going to ground.

          Hi Everybody,
This morning under close look I noticed some small white spots on my leaves. I thought it was too early in the life cycle and not in par with my feed for it to be a deficiency. So I turned the leaves over and I am quite sure that I have a small case of spider mites. This really sucks. Thankfully my plants are still quite small and I will drench them and also wipe the undersides of the leaves manually over time. I am thinking that I will do drenches with a drop of soap to about 2 litres of water and white vinegar. Followed or preceeded by wiping with the same solution on paper towel. This is a bummer though the plants are doing well.
I also will start including silica in my feed - though this will likely not have any affect on the mite population I think it will be good for the plants overall.
In the meantime, here are some photos of some of the worst leaves that are being feasted on thus far.

If you did not read sundays newsletter go ahead and read it. It covers spidermites. Get rid of them now and with a vengeance. If you have any plants inside do not wear the clothes, shoes, or touch inside plants until they have been washed. Once inside your in for hell.

Nirvana has easy to grow autos. Dinafem does too. I like fast buds but they all seem a bit pickier than other brands. But the best autos I've ever grown taste, and strength wise, were fast buds. They just are finicky.

I think they put the newsletters on the site after a few weeks. Maybe someone else knows where to find it. They are worth reading every week. Even for people who have been growing forever can learn something from them.

just want to share this article from master grower Ed Rosenthal, very useful with pictures https://www.edrosenthal.com/the-guru-of-ganja-blog/how-to-prevent

9fingerleafs posted the link above ... great info to battle mites. I think the mites have an eight day life cycle, so if you treat with soap or another topical, you need to repeat on that same schedule to kill the adults, the larvae and the eggs. Good luck.

quietlybinary I'm not big on subscriptions, but I'd recommend Nebula's newsletter, she's not selling anything, so it's really low key.

The good news is, when I decided to spray my plants with a vinegar and soap mixture, I totally burned up the plants! Thankfully the damage on the larger plants and the Forum Stomper is minimal but the youngest Ghost Toof of the 3 is totally fried. I will likely have to cut it down and I will make sure I show you the damage.

So the mite situation is not totally gone and I do not expect it to completely change. I will continue blasting it with cold water every 2-3 nights. On the other hand, I took a look at my miniature rose bush on the same balcony and it is totally swarming with small white insects. It really made the spider mite problem I have look like nothing! I can literally see these small bugs walking on top of the petals and leaves standing next to the small plant. There are a lot of spiders on my balcony but these are the first webs I have seen with these small insects in it. I am considering dumping the rose bush as a risk. But wanted to check in for opinions of others. Strangely, the colony did not seem to be a big fan of the white roses as much as these pink-orange ones.

I am having a small trouble identifying the new found bugs as they do not have the same color as the ones on my main plants. The ones on the roses are distinctly white but I do know that they are not white flies because they are smaller and they also do not look like they fly. I do not have a loupe so I cannot count their legs. Sorry the photos are hazy it was hard to capture the small sized insect.s

Do you think there is any relation to my spider mite problem with the other plants?

Can't tell myself, did do a google search of "small white insects on roses" and came up with the link attatched. Rose Midge?

As for it being the related to the spidermite infestation, eh. I believe you have an area in which they are able to thrive without predators or unsavory conditions for the critters. If you have the space, there are many plants that are critter deterrents. Marigolds, Chrysanthemum (woohoo spelled it right!), and I think Chives+Dill too are ones for you to go for.

Thanks a lot MeestaFeesha! I introduced some lavender into my grow space. I was going to go with Chrysanthemums (had to copy your spelling) but the lady at the garden shop said that the spot is too sunny for them. I did end up cutting the roses! I did not really like knowing that there was such a large colony living among other plants and putting them at risk. Thanks for the resource!

Of course bud, I try to share the limited knowledge I have! (My Edit is realizing I have google to thank here) 😂. I'll say, as far as shady spots in the garden/your balcony space, you can create shady spots by the placing of the plants as well. Will admit I am making an assumption on the available space that you have. I use beneficial insects myself, I'm not sure if that's an option for you, but ladybugs are lots of fun!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and for the resources. I just wanted to give a short update about what has been going on. I noticed the condition getting worse and started using Scott's Bug B Gon on the plant. I read and received a lot of advice not to spray anything because flowering has started but it got to a point where I knew that if the destruction continued I would have to pull out the plant anyway. I gave it one application. I did not use gloves and it made my skin quite sensitive for a day so look out if you decide to use it and wear gloves. The next day we received a good heavy rainfall and the breeze picked up a lot so I am sure these factors are slowing things down. I also did throw away the rose bush.

Here are some photos of what has been happening. The two Ghost Toof plants have been showing good progress. The Forum Stomper looks very slow, it is behind the other plants by a couple of weeks but also has shown a bit more resilience to the spider mites, maybe because of the younger age of the plant the mites are not as interested, I guess time will tell.

Mephisto Ghost Toof (x2) and Forum Stomper
                Outdoor Grow

Just a small update on what happened with the spider mites specifically. The youngest Ghost Toof was damaged by mites and spraying so I had to throw it out. The one Forum Stomper was severely stunted. I thought of throwing it out as well but I decided to let it flower and see how it turns out. The two eldest Ghost Toof plants look quite different, one with darker and bushier growth and the other light great and quite 'lean' with leaves. The two Ghost Toofs stretched quite a bit since I had the problem with the spider mites so I am looking forward to bud development.

The spider mites are still present but I am not as worried at this point. They favour dry and hot weather and the humidity has increased and temperature has cooled down a bit especially in the evenings so I am confident that the plants will make it through although you can see the damage to the foliage in the photos. I only used Bug B Gone once early in flowering when I could see the population escalating and have been lucky since then. It looks like the plants have about 4 weeks left to bulk up and I will need to stake the taller plants as they are already getting thic up top.

Thanks for all those who contributed. Lots of learning this season.

Good save...looks like they're doing all right in spite of the bug damage. There's nothing more frustrating than battling $#@!ing bugs. The only thing that's saved my outdoor plants from the same problem, has been the shitty weather. Rain, strong wind and relatively cool temps got rid of the critters, so hopefully I can get some clean clones to take inside. The bugs can have the moms if they want after that.
