Start with genetics - spend big bucks on quality seeds - figure out what strain you want or need and go from there.

Genetics without a doubt, lighting and favored environment, and as much nutrients organic or not, as long as your not burning them! It's like working on a car, just about anyone can change the oil, but with a detailed knowledge of how things works and it's purpose you could rebuild the engine and put many thousands of miles back on the car!
