    Rick Simson Oil

I'm getting ready to make some Rick Simson Oil as per Nebula's tutorial. My question is. Do I need to decarbaxilize the weed ? The tutorial doesn't say.

When you add heat to evaporate the ethanol this process also decarbs the THC.
4x4 600w HID empty for summer
3x3 400w HID with Bruce Banner and Skywalker Kush
2x2 65w Quantum Board LED with 4 mother strains
running all simultaneously for a perpetual harvests.

I just made my first batch of Rick Simpson oil, and I must say it went pretty well. 1 oz. of Skunk #1 got reduced to about 3 grams of oil. 1 dab (see picture) with a hit from the bong lasted me about 6 hours.
I will definitely do this again.

Too late for this batch but, for what it's worth - this from the Phoenix Tears web site (Rick Simpson's) "Even if the finished oil which you have produced does have the proper appearance, it is often still not a bad idea to put it in an oven at 120 degrees C, to insure that the oil has been decarboxylated properly." - emphasis was theirs. I have read others saying the same thing here on GWE. I hope to be making some soon myself so I'm paying attention to what you are all saying about your experience.

Thanks Crow, I'll have to try that next time. Did they say for how long at 120 degrees C ?

I use my ABV herb, so it’s already decarbed and much less potent.
      Grow and good luck

kingfish " Did they say for how long at 120 degrees C ?"

Here is from Rick's process description - "Take the oil that you poured into the stainless steel measuring cup and put it on a gentle heating device such as a coffee warmer to evaporate off whatever water remains in the oil. Quite often, it only takes a short time to evaporate the remaining water off, but also some strains produce more natural terpenes and flavonoids than others. These terpenes and flavonoids can cause the oil you now have on the coffee warmer to bubble for quite some time and it may take a while for such oils to cease this activity.

When the oil on the coffee warmer has little or no bubbling activity visible, take the oil off the coffee warmer and allow it to cool a bit, after which it can be drawn up into the plastic syringes for use. Another way to finish the oil without the use of a coffee warmer, is to put the oil in an oven set at 120°C or about(250°F) for about thirty minutes to an hour. Both of these methods work very well to bring the oil to a finished state."

Here is an informative link about the DECARB process and benefits - (Not from Rick Simpson) - https://greencamp.com/decarboxylation/

More as it happens. Let's keep sharing info until we get it right.

I use a crockpot with water instead. Keeps any part from getting to hot.

Oh but I make large batches at a time. Like his original recipe.

Here is a link - watch the 24 minute video of Rick Simpson (down the page) himself, showing how to make the oil - very low tech. https://greencamp.com/rick-simpson-oil/

He is, without a doubt, a very enthusiastic booster for the health benefits of RS0. Why no? He has his own direct experience to support all he says. At the 3 minute mark he discusses that this process actually dose decarboxylates the product without the need for further heating. At the end of the evaporation though - he turns up the heat for a few minutes to make certain that the alcohol is all evaporated.

My question today is - Do you really need to CURE your bud if the intent is to make oils and tinctures and NOT smoke it? Why not go with a dry but not fully cured product?

Just wondering out loud. Any thoughts??

For a few reasons you still want a 2 week cure minimum for taste, chlorophyll is a very strong taste that only curing will fix. Another is the perceived potency, as the curing happens the final metabolic processes of the plant are dying and using the remaining nutrients and water to desperately try and make seeds. This won’t work, but it will add a few more terpenes than simply drying.

              Thanks for the clarity furrysparkle.
