White Widow & Gorilla Cake Grow Journal

What's good fellow growers? First grow log on the forum, I've got some White Widow and Gorilla Cake bagseed that I've sprouted. By now it's two and a half weeks into vegatation and things are looking pretty good. I've done a lot of things so I guess I'll divide it up so it's easier to follow what I've done so far.

Training: all plants were pinched at 3 nodes which causes auxillary budsites to start growing bigger. I originally planned to leave it at that but after about a week I decided to go ahead and just top them all after noticing that a solid four main colas had emerged on all of the plants. That was done today.

Setup: for my setup I'm running a custom grow tank design built from a 55 gallon hdpe drum. I torched a door and ports for the lights, fan, exhaust etc. I spray painted the inside of the drum with flat white spray paint and the outside in black spray paint. All the hardware was glued in with a glue gun and lot of gorilla tape. The lights run from two power strips and are using about 107 watts total, the fan uses maybe 10 watts which brings the whole set up to 120 watts. The humidity can easily be changed with a mister but generally hovers at 30-40% and the temperature stays at 80-85Β° with the fan on. Lights have been 24-7 since sprout.

Lights: I have a bunch of 16 watt LED cells most of which are 5000k daylight temperature. I have three lights that output 450-650nm light in the 2500k temperature as well as one that I have closer to a plant as part of a separate experiment.

I will post more updates here as they come about!

Hey y'all. All four plants have seen some significant growth in the past few days. This is two days into week three as I type this. I've included some pictures, I guess I technically came up with my own HST technique for pinching/topping. Technically what I did was I pinched the main node and then waited for the auxillary nodes to show that apical dominance was broken before topping the pinch. The reason I did this was because I got high and thought about it and came to the conclusion that if I did that then I could likely get a solid four main colas from each plant and it wouldnt spend any energy growing some effed up fim top (not hating on pinching, I've used both techniques a million times and used them together here lol) Sweet. One of the plants I did something kind of different with. It's the one in the picture with two large auxillary main colas and then a top in the center where it splits. This plant will have six main colas already and that's just from the first round of training. I don't know if I will even subject any of these plants to more topping or pinching, probably not. From here on out I'll likely start strategic defoliation. Probably sometime this weekend because at the rate they are going they will fill the circumference of the grow tank very soon!

Oh! I've also light proofed the entire tank. Probably should've been done before I planted a seed but oh well. The plants are on an 18-6 light cycle now to spur the hormones in the plant that should begin development of preflowers. Should know something in the next couple weeks. I'll knock on wood to avoid jynxing myself but to date, after all the grows I've done, I've never grown a male plant from bagseed. Knock knock!

Nutrient mix so far: blood meal 50% bone meal 40% muriate 10%
Strains: three White Widows and one Gorilla Cake

Quick update! I removed the two main fan leaves (I know half of you are cringing and shaking your heads) to allow the smaller auxillary growth to flourish. I've always found cannabis plants will fill any "holes" you make in their foliage within a few days. Yesterday when I pinched the leaves I refused to look at the plants because they didn't look "nice" anymore but one day later and I think I can live with it until they fill out again πŸ˜‚

Progress... and I changed my light setup a bit. Two 50 watt actual-draw LED fixtures on their way should be here by Wednesday. Right now the whole setup pulls about 140 watts from the wall. After replacing a couple bulbs for the two 50s that should increase to about 220 watts for flower

Nice setup with the drum... only used em before for what they called β€œuds: ugly drum smoker”. Are you pruning aggressively to keep these plants in the drum for the entire term? My mistake was having a big space and in veg, they got big... in flower they are too big and 18” from a 9’ ceiling

It's been five days since I last updated you guys and these plants have taken off! I ordered a couple 50 watt actual-draw LED fixtures online and since they turned out to be awesome I am ordering some more soon. Actual wattage draw for my setup is close to 200 right now and the incandescent equivalent is something like 600 watts (yeah I know IE doesn't really mean much lmao) but I hope that by the 18th they are big enough that I feel comfortable switching them into flower light cycle

Edit: anyone else think I should scrog this mess? Im thinking about it just not sure how to go about it with this set up. Feed back is appreciated!

Edit 2 lol: I've never scrogged before but 'Sea of Green' and bend and secure is basically my modis operandi. So far bending and breaking is all I've done to these plants to achieve the shape and coverage I wanted.

I have switched the light cycle to 11/13 day-night. It's been about 3 days under that cycle and six days since my last post. I have been doing heavy defoliation for the past couple weeks, basically taking off any growth that will not be substantial in the end. Only grow what you need haha. I've also topped off the soil in each pot with some super soil I mixed with some bone meal and muriate of potash in a ratio of like 4:1 bonemeal to potash. Now I guess we just wait for those buds to show up

Approaching the end of the first week of flower and I'm happy to announce that all of the White Widows have shown white pistils. Still waiting on the Gorilla Cake so my fingers are crossed it doesn't turn out to be a male! I've also done some more defoliation of lower canopy leaves and insignificant growth nodes that would only suck away energy from areas with more potential. Shouldn't be long until these girls are covered in hairy budlets!
