In looking at HPS bulbs on amazon the price difference is pretty massive between brands. I was using an iPower brand HPS bulb that came with my first reflector, need to replace it it’s anywhere from about 15$ a bulb to around 100$. Does the performance of those high end bulbs really justify the price difference? 700% difference in price seems kinda nutty. Anyone have one they particularly like.

Some of the cheap bulbs might be underwelming, you will want to stick with the more reliable brands such as sunmaster, philips, genesis etc. If there were ways to manufacture gas discharge lights cheaper, without it effecting quality and efficiency. Then the major brands would be doing it as well. They dont which is why they are the leading manufacturers.
The cheaper products have to save cost somewhere, which could be from using lower quality materials in the arc tube, electrodes, discharge chemicals etc. Which can and does effect the quality of the spectrum, efficiency and even the durability and lifespan. The efficiency differences among high quality products are usually small. But the small efficiency boost in a product can save itself on runnings costs to make up for its higher initial cost. With cheaper products the differences can be large enough to be noticable.Written Articles:

I also used the bulb that came with my kit for my first HID grow, the brand was Apollo. After checking the light distribution with a meter I went down to my local hydro store and purchased a Hortilux bulb. The difference in light distribution was well worth the extra $$ IMO. I was able to keep my light further from the plants to get the optimum coverage area while maintaining ideal light levels.Failure is an opportunity for improvement!!

K thanks guys. I’ve got to check the grow shop price vs amazon. If they have to stay under the MH for a couple light cycles week 3 of flower should be fine?48”x48”x80” flower/main tent
