Edibles: Sativa vs indica, does it matter

I've heard some conflicting data regarding edibles and whether or not the effects you get from smoking a traditional sativa transitions to edibles. Likewise for indicas. I can't remember exactly, but I recall hearing on a podcast that edibles are processed by the liver and converted into a specific form of thc. The traits that make a sativa uplifting or an indica couchlocky don't transfer when eaten. (Yes I said couchlocky)

I've also heard that these traits do transition over but I haven't heard any evidence to really back it, other than subjective opinions.

I dont have much experience with edibles, but I'd like to learn more about them and incorporate them into my treatments.

    Thouhts?

    Hey Nugs:

After you have eaten it, all you can have is a subjective opinion because I don't know anybody that wants to do Thin Layer Chromatography on what comes later.

All kidding aside, I have a bad disc in my back that causes a lot of pain. I have a cannabis prescription to help manage the condition. I do not tolerate opioids or anything in that family of drugs and I was taking so many NSAIDs it was ruining my liver. The cannabis really helps!

Ok most of the meds I take are in chocolate bars. I like chocolate. There are several excellent companies that make various strengths and blends ie. all sativa, all indica, all CBD or blends. The differences in the highs equate to smoking them but they are different than smoking (subjective). First off it takes much longer (up to 2 hours or more) to get high but the high can be more intense and last many hours longer than a couple of hits off a nug. This translates to longer pain control. I have found that I need to mix it up. If I take the same strain or variety too many times in a row the efficacy is reduced. Generally if I need to medicate in the morning I use a Sativa dominant med, if it is late in the afternoon a 1:1 THC/CBD blend seems to work the best and at night the Indica is the best option. Talk about couchlock those 180gm Indica bars will screw you right down to that couch til the next day. I have eaten cookies, brownies, gummy bears, chewing gum and maybe some others I don't remember. the effect is based on what went into them and how good the maker is.

One of the problems with edibles is the length of time it takes to get relief. once in awhile I get a pain shooting down my leg that feels as if it was stuck in a glass kiln and is being stabbed by a thousand ice picks. This is when I need to change my posture and smoke something right now.

The only way you are going to know what works for you is by trying them all . Clear your schedule, surround yourself in your happy place and try them starting with really small doses and wait 2 hours before you take anymore. It is easy to think after one hour this isn't working and take more - big mistake with sativa maybe paranoia, psychedelic, racey; with indica you usually just wake up the next day with a Sharpie mustache and big eyebrows or was that just me? Keep a written record of how much you took and how you responded to the dose. It won't take long to figure out what works for you.

    Good luck.

Fantastic info MOG! Its actually for my wife (fibromyalgia). I have a pile of sativa dominant trim that I was going to make into butter and I wanted to know if it would help her. She really doesn't like smoking strong sativas as they are too racy for her. She can get anxious and paranoid if it's too strong.

          Royal Nugs:

I smoked from the middle 60s to early 80s and always enjoyed the high. Then some career choices prevented me from partaking for the next almost 30 years until this back problem cropped up and Medical Cannabis was prescribed. Well the weed today is so, so much stronger that I have the same problem as your wife. If I do too much Sativa I have negative type reactions. I have a chewy chocolate truffle that I bit the corner off (smaller than a pencil eraser) I got so psychedelic that I was hallucinating. But I will tell you the pain was gone......... So now when I feel I need that truffle I take about three grains of rice worth and I am ok. I don't like being over medicated on Indica either but when that happens I can usually just go to sleep.

Somewhere during my original investigation of medical weed I ran accross the statement that if you are on a runaway THC trip that sniffing peppercorns will bring you down some. I have never tried it. I cannot vouch for the efficacy but it may be worth looking into. here is a link to an article about it.

          Good Luck,
A recent article published on the Canadian website CannabisDigest suggests that a few whiffs of black peppercorn can effectively combat THC induced paranoia
