Great feedback everyone. I love that you're going to do something with titles Nebula. Very cool.

Id love to have a system where custom titles are determined by their peers. Maybe after a member reaches a certain criteria there is a topic created automatically and members have a week or so to nominate and then vote on a title.

That's why there would be a nomination and vote. I'm pretty sure all the members voting would be considerate.

The user name will stay the same. But we can change our message identity which will be separate day today if we choose to do so.

I think titles is a great idea. I think everyone likes to earn a little status within the forum. Right now I find that I always notice how many bars each has, rather than their member title.

Right now we're just trying to learn the forum software a little better, but we know the functionality for titles is in there somewhere! We just need to figure out how to configure it!

Thanks for weighing in, we love hearing suggestions from the community, keep them coming!

NebulaHaze, I like the forum for the information and interaction with the other members.
To paraphrase Mr. Shakespeare, 'weed by any other name, Skunk would still smell sweet to me....' , or something like that. lol. Is a name necessary? The 'join date' gives members a 'mile marker' as to one's possible accrued knowledge. Any title given will, most likely, irritate someone. That being said, I'll put my two cents worth in, 'likes' would be a better indication of knowledge or experience than just total number of posts. This method is not 'fool proof' either.
Still this forum is great, or as my Dad used to say "It's better than a sharp stick in the eye!"lol.
          Thanks,

I am not a real active poster on the forum, but that is from a lack of experience, not a lack of enthusiasm.. I feel that only actual experience should be shared in most cases.
I would like a way to know if the information being posted by a user is from experience or education. Just fishing..

Anything I post should be verified with Green before trying. If anything goes wrong blame the new green not the old one.

Great idea. I quit facebook years ago because of the popularity contests generated by the likes system. I like it here at gwe, no pressure. I like Carmichael ideas but maybe a simple system of describing your own status as a grower(20 years experience as a landscaper and 6 months as grower, not sure where I fit). Which I think would help quite a bit when asking questions. Green75 advice vs mine should be a no contest for example. I'm with tika, I tend to overpost too and that should not be rewarded!😊

How about a way for us to rate ourselves? We can have a list of titles, all reflecting a level of growing ability, ranging from say......never ever....up to....growing guru or something like that. Then we can proclaim our level of Experience (not education, or you tube history).
I think that would help me decide who's advice I want to try myself.
I would call myself a 3-timer and that would tell people what my experience is.

hey nebula, thank you for allowing this to be so organic and democratic....uncommon generosity on your (and sirius's) part. i have been around other forums where that would never have happened.

I spent a bunch of time on another forum- where most titles were associated with winning monthly contests- best plant, best bud, stuff like that. I got a bunch of titles and prizes and that's sort of nice but still never liked the popularity contest thing really, even though it can't be totally avoided.
But what really made me happy was getting and giving reputation points to other members. It's fairly anonymous, you don't have to announce to the world that you're giving reps but you can if you want, and nobody does it if they don't mean it. At least where I was - reps weren't really publicly displayed- just sort of a private count that you collected- with comments given along with the rep points explaining why.
Likes are a little different and are given for a variety of reasons. The reps system is very cool cause it's a direct way of giving respect to somebody, which to me anyway is more important than titles and prizes (even though some prizes are very fun to get too- especially, my favourite, seed coupons!). Fun to bomb a worthy person with reps when you have a lot yourself, and watch their reputation jump.
Looks like there is a some sort of reps system here ? cause I do see bars beside people's names -but I'm too newbie here to have looked at how that works yet. Reps could contribute to a persons 'fancy title' maybe along with other factors.
                Very cool thread.

That is a cool system Weasel. Rep points add to a persons reputation which in tern raises there title. If people like you and your advise they can give rep points.

You can also have a title above the Avatar that increases by the number of documented harvest a member has.

Yeah it's a good system. For the most part it's invisible cause you couldnt see how many rep points a person has. The only way to kind of know how much a member had was to see how many points you got if they gave you reps.
When you gave reps it was based on a percentage of how many total points you have -just a few percent of your total. I'm not sure what the actual calculation was.
Makes sense to throw in a few rules like -you can't give reps to the same person twice in a row but have to spread them around to other members- and a couple limiting factors like that. Can only give so many reps per day- stuff like that to keep people from hacking the system.

So -when you get reps from someone who has a ton - you get a decent handful of points. When you get reps from a new member you hardly get any rep points but it's still always a very nice gesture.
It's just something that a person does when once in a while they read a great post, get good advice, a good laugh- whatever.
I don't know if most forums have that system or maybe this one does too. I was only ever in that one other forum and I spend all the rest of my time in a cave.

I have not seen anyone on this site give a grower information that they didn't think was good advice. I have seen that 'well meaning' advice be dead wrong. It is difficult to sort it out. Perhaps this will help.
