So I have this same question but I read some where today that most flowering times are based on outdoor environments and they start counting when the first signs of flower show up if this is true or not I have no idea. It's 4:19 u got a minute?

I always mark the date when I switch to 12/12, and I also mark the date when I first see pre-flowers emerge. It seems like my indoor grows always take somewhat longer than what the breeder says about flowering time. Bottom line: trichomes.Anyone can grow schwag. Well, the Breeders and Banks have an interest in having short flowering periods, so they almost certainly be a tad earlier than in practice.
IMO, there's already enough subjectivity in when to harvest that for any accuracy it's best to go by the 12/12 switch. It's a definitive starting point that's always the same for all growers no matter where or what conditions.
Outside is it's own story and doesn't have the control we do indoors. Indoors we're all about control, lol, there's no reason 12/12 isn't the standard for Flowering Time with an Early, Prime, Late Harvest week number.
Don't get me wrong I also note various times for things like pre-flower, pistil color change, trich. color change etc. but those numbers are way more about what my environment is doing, and not the general timeline of the Strain.
I'm probably overthinking it but yea I like the 12/12 start because I know exactly when that happens and don't have to guess if those pistils are the right length to start the flowering clock, lol.

So the last time I was reading up on some breeders flowering periods I read some interesting things right from the breeder.
In order to create better sales and not discourage from getting specific strains most breeders will advertise a flowering period that does not account for up to a 2 week transition. Which is why most strains have a 2 week variance (ex. Girl Scout Cookies is 8 -10 weeks as advertised). So in actuality you shouldnt count transition if comparing to advertised time period.
I personally count it from the time I make the switch and just really keep an eye on the trichomes for what I want. Unfortunately as with everything else being sold out there always remember
PERSONAL EXPERIENCES WILL (not may but will) VARY
