Try not to disturb the roots when draining, I use a cheap battery power water transfer pump to drain mine, the light won't be an issue for the time it takes to drain resorvoir. I fill 5 gal buckets with water and neuts and ph it before I drain so I'm ready to fill as soon as it's empty.

Welcome to the forum Zeek,
I'm on my fifth grow, now with two 6 gallon 'Bubbleponics' set ups. I have my reservoirs set up on boards on top of inverted five gallon buckets so that they are the correct height to drain into a five gallon bucket on the floor thru a 5/8' drain valve.
Be sure to keep the water very well aerated and keep the temperature between 60 to 70 degrees F.. I use two four inch air stones with a dual outlet air pump for each reservoir and I keep the temperature below 7o deg. F. by, periodically placing frozen water bottles in the reservoirs as needed. You, also, need to keep the pH at 6.0 +/- .5 for the tank and the nutrient solution.
