Best strains to grow Indoors for my 2nd grow?

New member
About to start my 2nd indoor grow. But I don't know what strains to get this time.

I want to grow enough that it lasts until next summer, if possible. My first grow got about 4 oz under a 200 watt Spider Farmer LED, and at about an ounce a month that is only 4 months of weed. I've realized a bunch of mistakes I made that lowered the yield. Especially that I need to let the plants fill in the space fully with bud sites before I initiate 12/12. I think I started 12/12 too early and that hurt my yields because a lot of the tent was still empty at harvest. I've read I should be able to get 1 g/watt, so with my 200 watt LED I'm hoping for 200 grams or about 7 ounces. If I could get that down every harvest, I'd only need to grow twice a year.

Are there any particularly awesome new strains going around right now? Or proven classics?

I want to grow 4 different strains. One that's really potent, one that smells amazing, one that's high yielding, and a wildcard one. That way I'll have all my bases covered.

I was hoping you could all help by sharing your favorite strains.

What strains have you been growing lately and where did the seeds come from?

What has been the most potent, smelly, high yielding, or other kind of awesome strain you've grown so far?

Hi, growingisfun.
(Of course it is!)

I do not have a direct answer for you, simply some ideas.

"Favorite strains" is a personal choice.
Browse the seed catalogs for those that interest you. Try to get varieties that finish at the same time. It will make your grow, dry, cure easier.
As you gain experience, you should get at least 3 oz per plant x 4 = 12 oz.
Keep trying. You'll get there.

No right or wrong answer here so many strains to try. I like the classics, granddaddy purple, northern lights and white widow gdp is my go to. According to nebula purple ghost candy is one of her favorites. It is on my bucket grow list along with about another hundred out there. Hop on North Atlantic website and you can find lots there.

Hi @growingisfun Welcome aboard.

When you flip to flower is your call of course. A good thumbnail to use is to expect your plant to at least double in size during the stretch after flipping to flower. Some sativas will quadruple. After a couple grows where the plants grew too tall, I learned how to grow in a manifold from Nebula's tutorial on the GWE site. I highly recommend that grow method for photo period sativa plants.

Having learned that genetics is indeed important, a forum member grew a cultivar from Ace Seeds. I looked at their catalog and have since settled mostly on their seeds. I decided a while back that growing a strain one time does not allow me to get to know that variety and max out it's potential.
I like Ace for their genetics and reputation. I buy seeds from Mandala Seeds, North Atlantic Seed Company, and ILGM. I grow photo sativa plants in one tent and autoflowering plants in another tent. The photo tent allows me to grow 100% photo sativa plants that take a long time to mature. The auto tent allows me to grow plants that harvest quicker. The White Truffles can be harvested about 80 days from seed give or take. The Zamaldelica auto is about 90 days from seed.

Killer A5 Haze is a potent photoperiod 100% Sativa with a long flowering period and a high yield. Maybe my favorite of all time. Mandala Seeds, North Atlantic Seed Company
Honduras x Panama is another high yielding photo Sativa from Ace. Not as potent as the Killer A5. Last grow, two plants, was a massive 40+ ounce harvest. Mandala Seeds
White Truffles is a a potent easy to grow Indica based auto. ILGM
Zamaldelica is an easy to grow sativa dominant auto with a nice smell, good yield and very potent. Mandala Seeds, North Atlantic Seed Company
I do not have a favorite cultivar to grow for smell. I like it all.

Good luck with the second run! I completely agree with Beeman's shout for Granddaddy Purple, it's an absolute classic. Also, definitely take Allotrope's advice on matching finishing times if you're running 4 different strains in the same tent. It will save you a massive headache come harvest time. Keep us posted!

Yes, the first actually good weed I ever had was Granddaddy Purple, so I'd love to grow it someday. That's a great strain idea.

@golfnrl I will check out Ace Seeds, and thanks for the tips about the size to flip to flower. I didn't understand until partway through the flowering stage why it's so important to let the plants get big enough.

I understood they needed to be flat but I didn't realize that they also needed to be wide enough to fill the space, and tall enough to grow long buds. I feel like if I'd let them grow even 1-2 weeks more before flowering it would have increased the yield a lot.

Also I needed to take better care of them healthwise. I wasn't paying close attention to pH and I think I was over watering them the whole grow. I think they wanted bigger pots. The light was maybe too close. I was using coco with Dyna-Gro nutrients. I plan to switch to the General Hydroponics FloraNova line, so it's still 1 bottle per stage like Dyna-Grow, but with the weed growing power of General Hydroponics. The guy at the hydro store said GH makes some of the best bud quality if you're growing in coco.

The plants seemed okay in veg but they got yellow in flowering 😭 This is before it got bad. Luckily the buds still came out good. I'm hoping next grow with the better nutrients, watering, and paying attention to pH I can keep them healthier.

@sweetazbro Thanks man, I will!

General hydroponics is my go to nutrient this past winter grow I tried the flora nova series and really like it my only complaint is is it is thick but since you don’t have to mix other nutrients like the 3 part mix. Gh also makes a dried form of nutrient called maxi grow it is also a single mix application you mix in water one for veg a one for flower. Purchased it a while back bu5 have not tried…another nutrient I tried this past indoor grow was grow dots had good results too. It is a premix that you mix in the soil and just add water. They have one for day neutral (auto) and photo. You don’t have to water to runoff good stuff.
