LET’S CHAT ABOUT PERFORMING THE FINAL TRIM!!

Of course everyone does things differently. But, I am curious about the pictures we tend to see of nice fat, tight, large closely-trimmed top colas that have been cured. Other than the fact that these make nice recognizable pictures, is there a reason this image represents the norm? Do you put these in your jars this way? Does anyone separate the plant further from the stem on these colas when processing your dried harvest? Any thoughts on how the methods impact the final product? And, I’m also curious about the smaller leaves that are full of trichomes. If you aren’t interested in making edibles and the like, what are your thoughts on ignoring a close shave?

I don't make edibles and the like, I just smoke the flower. With that being said, I leave the sugar leaves attached and after my buds have dried, I will break the larger buds up before going in the jars for cure with hopes of preventing mold. You're going to break them up before you smoke them anyway. Also, I don't care if my ganja buds are looking good for a photo op or not. I just want a great smoke! That's my 2 cents worth

I want to opine about the picture thing and I'm sure I will be punished for it. I posted not long ago the 1st plant picture I have ever had taken from my grows and I have been growing for many years. Pictures can serve a purpose, and mine was to prove to the picture takers that I can grow a nice plant. Some people have the book knowledge to grow but can't get their hands to work and I just wanted to show others that my hands do work

I leave the sugar leaves on the small buds because I don't have the dexterity in my hands to trim them, they break off in the jars and make decent joints or they can be used to make hash

I grow intentionally smaller buds and break up the bigger ones if I get them before jarring. Giant kolas are for instagram and high times pictures. Cool and all but more risky with no up side aside from bragging rights, lol.

I trim the big fan leaves before I whole plant dry and then the flower when it’s dry (for smoking) close and nice, as I think the sugar leaves/leaves may contribute some harshness.
The sugar leaves definitely contain good stuff , but since I run everything I trim off for water hash there’s no issue as it all get used.
I have started doing only a rough trim on about half of what I harvest as I generally have more flower than I can smoke and if it goes for IWH a close trim is just extra time in trim jail. If I need more for smoking months down the road I’ll trim up some more as needed. I also think this approach is good as it means more biomass to hold the right moisture level (like buffer)and also protects the buds a little in the jars.

Hi, All.
Here is my current dry/trim protocol.
- I wet trim the plant just before harvesting to get the big fan leaves off, wash the buds to get rid of any dust and debris (outside grow) and hang a few hours to dry off the wash water.
- Then, freshly harvested buds are hung until dry on clothes hangers in a totally dark, 55oF, 50% RH, basement room.
- I final trim the buds with Fiskars trimmers, cutting them down to fit in the curing jars. I think doing a wet trim before drying makes post drying trim go faster.

I keep sparkly, dried trim for RSO, dry ice hash, joints, edibles.

BTW, @Smallgrow, quality pics!
