    My First Ever Grow

Hi everyone, this is my first post and my first ever grow! I'm growing in coco with Nutrifield nutrients, 600w Vipar Spectra LEDs, 2 x 5 tent and my strain of choice is blueberry (fem) from I Love Growing Marijuana by Robert Bergman. I chose blueberry because they seem to be a good strain for beginners and I like the sound of the smoking and medical effects, plus I like the fact it's an old school strain from the 70s.

Anyway, I germinated the seeds 6 weeks ago and just as they sprouted we got hit by a massive heat wave (high 40c) and I lost 2 out of 5 seedlings, but 3 of them survived. For the first a couple of weeks they were inside with air con, but then I put them in my grow tent located in the garage without any air con and the only cooling they had was fans and exhaust fan/filter. At the moment, I can't afford to be running an air con for them, so I'm prepared not to suffer the consequences. I'm very surprised they made it through the extremely high temps, especially when the max temp in the grow temp was 45c!!

Even though they look pretty healthy to me they seem so stumpy and short, plus they're so bushy underneath, which is good for me because I want short plants due to space restrictions. The plants I've seen in all the videos I've watched (and I've watched a hell of a lot!) only have a few nodes in earlier veg stage, but my girls are sprouting so many nodes underneath they might need a bikini wax soon. Anyway, I would like to get some advice on what to do next with my three green little Tyrion Lannister's:

Is this normal growth for the blueberry strain or is their dwarfism and under bush the result of heat stress in their early lives? It says on ILGM.com that blueberry marijuana seeds grow into dense and stout plants with red, purple and later blue teints, but then I've read they grow tall on other sites. I'm a bit confused how they should actually look at this stage of veg.

A couple of days ago I raised my lights higher to try to get them to stretch a little, but they don't seem to want to grow up to the light at all. Should I start to lollipop them so the under bush isn't taking away nutrients from the top vegetation and flip them into flower knowing I won't get much yield this grow, which is fine because I didn't expect much for my first grow? Or should I give them a couple more weeks of veg to see if they grow any more?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    welcome toke,
dude your plants are juicy! great color and shape.
how big you let them get is up to you to a point. how tall does this strain finish? how much room do you have for them to grow vertically?
if you dont know, then be prepared for the plant to double after switch to bloom. maybe even triple for some sativas.
once you got that figured out, it could really help.your yield if you could veg 2 more weeks. but you can still get a bunch of nice buds if you flip now.
everything looks great, plants and setup!

wikileaf says blueberry rarely finishes over 3.5 feet indoors. how high can you let them grow safely?

Hi IGH, thanks for replying so quickly.

I don't want them any taller than 3-4 feet. I topped them a couple of days ago, but it was only 1 node down because they're short asses. In the next day or so I'm going to lollipop and give them another week or so to recover before I flip them to flower. I'm going to SCROG and depending how much bigger they'll get in flower I might do some super cropping as well to keep them as short as possible. Because they're so bushy, I'm hoping I'll get more yield than I expected for my first grow. I didn't expect anything special with my first grow. I'm treating more like a learning experience than anything else and anything I yield is just a bonus. I'm loving it though and I have to confess I'm already addicted to growing.

hell ya! top em, pull em over hard and bind em, defol, and drop that screen on em! if you never scrogged before, be sure to check the tutorials n stuff on the website so you see how to get the most from that method.
      cool shit man

I've never scrogged before as this is my first grow, but I've watched so many videos and read heaps of articles about growing that I feel like a college graduate with all the knowledge, but no real world experience. I'll keep posting updates as my girls mature, so watch this space!

Welcome to the forum, Reaper! Your babies went through some stress, but seem all the hardier for it!! I think your plan sounds good, and though they may be squat now, they will stretch when you switch them, as you already know. I love how bushy she looks!!!

My girls are all nicely trimmed now. One more week of veg then I'll flip them to flower.

they look much more open now. did you cut off all of those growth tips?

        #7
I trimmed anything that wasn't really growing or getting any light. I may have gone a little overboard, but I felt it was the right call considering I've got two new colas developing very nicely where I topped them the other day. Either way, I'm not worried about making mistakes. It's all a part of the learning process.

thats right! some of us (me lol) learn best hands on! you will get your buds, no worries. but think 2 weeks before you flip. give the new arms time to grow out. and dont cut off anything else that isnt an old fan leaf. dont worry about height, you can pull them down.

Hands on is the only way to learn this stuff!! Constant, committed interaction with our plants, and awareness of what's going on in the grow environment.

Good choice. I've gotten several Blueberry seeds from Seedsman as freebies. It was an easy grow, and is one of our favorites too. Although it is designated an Indica you should remember two involved in its parentage are Sativas Thai and Purple Thai. My Blueberry last year got very close to six feet, and was a prodigious producer.

It might help them get taller to turn on the flowering setting on your LED light, since the yellow/red tends to make plants grow more "stretchy" while the blue light tends to keep them short and bushy. They look great! How much height do you have in your space to work with?

Hey NebulaHaze, thanks for the tip about turning on the flowering setting. I'll definitely try that out. My tent is 5xW2.5Dx5H so I don't want them to grow too tall anyway. I'm going to get another tent (4x4) soon that will be taller and maybe use my current tent as a veg tent for future grows.

Switching my LEDs to flower has made a huge difference. Thanks again for the tip!

Tomorrow, I'll be flipping them to flower.
