Super Soil vs Coco vs Hydro: Which one is "best"?

I get there is no "best" way to grow weed, just everyone's personal favorite way. I feel like I've seen top shelf weed come out of every type of setup there is.

But after looking at today's "Just Add Water" super soil guide, it got me thinking about grow mediums.

For reference, I'm about to start my next grow. I'm thinking photoperiod, feminized seeds, 2x4 tent, 300W LED grow light. But not sure yet about the grow medium. I've grown many ways, but not sure if I want to use my "favorite" way or try something different.

Here's what matters to me for each one.

    Super soil
    • I like the no nutrients, but I feel like it's kind of hard to do with my tap water. My tap water is really high pH. I've grown with super soil before and I used citric crystals to bring the pH down organically, but I ended up getting deficiencies until I kind of dialed that in. I feel like I'd need to do it for a few grows to really "master" it. If I had awesome spring water, I could use it straight, and growing in super soil would be a lot more appealing. If I ever move out of the city and get good water, super soil is definitely the way I would grow.
    Coco
    • I like the results I've gotten in the past. I feel like I just use the General Hydroponics Flora trio at half strength on the bottle, adjust the pH to 6.0, and the plants kind of grow themselves. If I do this next grow, I was going to try those auto-watering pot bases, and I think that would make it even easier, since before now I've only done coco in drain-to-waste. The idea of not dealing with runoff is really appealing. And I've heard the plants actually grow faster too.
    Hydro
    • I feel like this is the most fun grow style. I don't like the "bucket" style with the lines bringing the water from a main reservoir. I like the "DWC" style with a 10-gallon tub and filling it with 5 gallons of water, and each plant gets their own whole reservoir. It makes me feel like a scientist, maintaining the PPM, caring for the roots, learning the plant's individual needs... I feel like you end up having such a deep relationship with each plant. I remember all my hydro plants. Plant personalities shine in hydro. You get super fast growth and big yields. My problem with hydro is you can only grow a few strains at a time if you're using the bigger tubs.
As I'm writing this, I realize it's between coco and hydro for me.

I think maybe coco wins. I like that can grow a ton of plants at once, and harvest a few ounces of many different strains. Yet with hydro I only like growing one or two plants at a time. It would suck to get to the end, and if I don't like the strain, then I have a pound of weed I don't really want. It's just that when I've had the most fun growing, it's always been hydro.

Maybe auto-watering pot reservoirs will bring in a lot of the "hydro" feel to growing in coco. I wonder if you could put a little airstone inside and have a true coco/hydro hybrid system. Get the feels and the strain choice.

What's your favorite grow medium and why?

My favorite grow method is the autopot system. It's considered hydro. I started off growing in soil. It was just OK. I really like the idea of growing in dirt and just adding water. But I don't have the facilities to do it right. And, I tended to love the plants to death.

I switched to the autopot system and haven't looked back. I have used soil in the system but switched to a 5050 blend of coco and #3 perlite in 5 gallon cloth pots. Autopots are a bottom feed wicking type of watering system. The autopot system is not the same as a self watering base. I use a 12 gallon rez. There is no runoff. The rez PH is maintained by a Bluelab PH controller. I use ACI equipment to run the lights, fans, and tent humidifiers. I don't see me switching.

I have changed my goals to focus on quality and not quantity. I am trying get more comfortable with manifolding 100% sativa's or sativa dominant cultivars.

Unless you have an outdoor, garden soil grow, coco/perlite is by far my preferred grow medium. Reusable, clean, odorless, impossible to overwater. Plants seem to love it. Have not done the autopot system yet. On the list for the 2026-7 winter greenhouse grow.

Coco/p is the best way to go for many reasons. Best is in the eye of the beholder.
Don't worry, be happy, grow sticky buds.
