Does rot/mold usually compromise the entire plant?

We just harvested four plants, and unfortunately we lost one of them entirely to rot. Days earlier, there were no signs of rot. But when we started chopping branches off, every bud had infestations. I was just wondering if losing the entire plant is an unusual occurrence or not.

Sorry for the loss, that can happen in higher RH and or lower circulation during flowering, To check for mold you cannot see outright try and pull a leaf from a big fat bud. If it doesn't pull off it's ok, if it does slide right out check it's stem for mold or rot then the bud if you do.

This is a prime example. Lemon Haze auto went 18 weeks with no signs of stopping till I pulled a leaf off and discovered mold myself. I salvaged what I could and that was that. The squares in the net are 4".

Mold and BR get started by mold spores. These spores are everywhere. The spores can not be seen with they human eye and are only evident when the spores grow. When environmental conditions are right, the spores grow into a mold colony. The colony produces more spores and so on. If you have mold on one part of the plant, the rest of the plant is at increased risk of developing more infections by the fact that they have been exposed to the spores from the original colony. So it is a numbers and odds game that is being played. This is why it is important to cut anything that is suspect immediately, and dispose of it away from the plants. Wash your hands and cutters also.
Don't worry, be happy, grow sticky buds.

I always thought bud rot was systemic and once started can spread within the plant really quickly. Once I see it I start thinking about cutting and running. If I'm wrong please let me know.

That's pretty much it. Once it starts it will spread.
