Growing in a 4x4 tent. Going for a big yield. Looking for the best pot and saucer combo. Currently have 5 gallon bags in 14” saucers. It makes for a larger footprint. Do I really need 5 gallon pots? Second grow. What do you use???

I use a variety of pot sizes and types. Depends on the goals. Big plants need big pots, but big yields don’t need big pots per se. How much light in the 4x4 (watts/brand) and how tall of a tent/space? That and genetics will dictate your yield more than pot size. You can pull a pound off of one if you give it enough room and light to grow. That same amount of light/space can be given to multiple plants in smaller pots and theory will be it’ll give you the same yield.

If using soil as large as you can fit, 7gal
5gal for autos in coco, should be fine for photos too given only a 4x4.
I steer clear of fabric potsFlower Room: 11' x 7' x 7.5'H, 480w AC, 13gal/day dehumidifier, 1.5gal ultrasonic humidifier, 60gal (27gal usable) nute tank, 16" pedestal fan & 18" wall fan. Lighting and climate automated. Hand watering.
Veg Cupboards: Two 4x2x6H cupboards. SF2000 Evo in one SF7000 in other. Climate controlled and automated. Hand watering
Aeroponics Low Pressure Bucket: 20W LED. 5 clones & 20W LED 11 clones
Lights: Mars Hydro FC-E1200W, SF-7000, SF-2000 evo in flower room.
Medium: Coco/perlite, 7.2gal pots, no drains
Current Grow: 5 x Photos Franklin's Orange Zkittles x Sour Diesel in flower room, 3 Franklin's White Widow x Sour Diesel Clones, 13 x Orange ZkittleZ x Sour Diesel clones in Aeroponics buckets x 2.

They will out grow your 4 ft head height very quick in 5 gallon pots - The more roots the larger she will grow..
I have been growing in a 3 1/2 ft tent since we moved a few years ago and it has been a learning curve, however 3 gallon smart pots in coco work very well and Help to Keep The Plant Height under control. LST is used and some times supper cropping has to be implemented.
Yields for 4 plants are usually around a Pound.
The reality is usually height problems do not manifest until the end and by then, one is already gambling if they will run out of room...
4ft shrinks really quick once you add pot height and light distance in to the factor...I have 4 ft but some of that is joist space.
Good Luck

Well shit. After reading the comments. I feel like maybe I'm hurting, my yields. I put photos in 5 gallon and autos in 3 gallon fabric.Last edited by Mollisol; 01-09-2025, 07:51 PM.SF 35X47X70 tent

Back to plant size and how much work you're willing to put into it. Are you looking at growing tall, medium, short, or dwarf strains? Bushy Indica or lanky Sativa?
Four autos in 5-gallon fabric pots max my 3x3 with plenty of defoliation and flower maneuvering. If I ever get back to fem, I'll probably wind up with 2 plants getting 3 toppings in 7-gallon unless I want to up my bag and saucer size to 10-gallon.
If I had a 4x4, I wouldn't change what I just broke down in plant quantity and size. It would just mean I do a little less defoliation, and I would have more room to get in to work.C'mon, mule!

I have 5 afghan kush plants I 5 gallon fabric pots. I am mainlining all 5. I have built a giant lazy Susan, so I can rotate them to front to manipulate them. I have each plant on its own smaller lazy Susan. I’m waiting for plants to finish the last phase of mainlining. Originally meant to have 4 but all my clones were doing good and my friends didn’t want to adopt ut

Was thinking it would be easier to turn, but it’s doable. Have strong magnets at 8 points to hold it in position when working on plants. Had them too close and they were hanging up. Center turns on a lazy Susan bracket from Lowes. There are 8 small wheels spaced out near the outer edge. Will be adding some 1” nylon webbing loops to grab to turn it.
