    Germination impatience!

Hi again all. 3 seeds in the paper towel method, day 4. one has definitely grown a tap. The other two are my question, they look have white lines around it which I thought might be tap roots about to pop, but hoping it’s not mould. Am I being impatient here? How much time should I give? I suppose one out of three is something, she popped after 24hrs

    TIA

Howdy Hdk40, I have had some seeds that took longer to germinate than others. I would suggest that you look at the seeds 'with the white lines' thru a loupe or magnifying glass and if the white is 'fuzzy' then it could be mold, if so, get rid of those seeds. What temperature are you keeping the seeds at and are you keeping them in the dark? Some photos might be of some help.

Thanks for the reply, I’m getting frustrated lol. So a plastic container, paper towels damp using 2 parts bottles water, one part hydrogen peroxide. Wrapped up so completely in dark but I’ve just introduced a heat mat, it’s a lovely day today, sun is shining so I’ve moved to windowsill (hoping introducing abit of sunlight might get them moving. I’m worried the one that has definitely popped has stopped growing tho, doesn’t seem to have moved at all since day 2 (day 4 now) closer look says the other two are on there way but again nothing since day 2, I’m a newbie grower if you can’t tell 😂 Got the bug all ready tho

      TIA

Make sure they have air to breath.

Give them at least another week and keep them moist. Sounds like a tap root popping to me.

Bluey is it normal for a seed to produce a tap and not seemed to have moved in growth for nearly two days? I have re misted the towels and put back on the mat

Hdk40 not unusual. The seed has to soften so it can open and that can take a lot longer than a couple of days. I germinate at 21⁰C and will never use peat plugs again

SoOrbudgal I brought in the heat mat on day 3, whether I’ve let the paper towel get abit drier than it should or overheated I’m not sure. Hopefully they are ok wel see. I’ve got some Orion F1s, white widow and tangerine tango back ups. I think next time I will watch the temperature if these go tits up

OHHHH that's a new strain i've read about. I had trouble in winter sprouting seeds took at least 5days lots of looking an moving the baggie, I may try that shot glass of water an drop of peroxide method next time.

paper towel method seems to take too long. I always keep my seeds in a glass of water until they pop them plant them I. The dirt. Only ever need to wait 2 days usually

Right googling too much helps nothing. One thing I don’t get is, some people say is “Don’t plant the seed until the tap root is whatever length long” Other threads saying if you don’t plant it as soon as it pops it will die due to lack of oxygen and needs a medium as soon as it pops (which makes more sense to me but ain’t half confusing) *day 5 now and no movement on the seeds, the tap root seems to look bright white and healthy but not long at all. Frustrating 😂

Those are some pale seeds. Mine are real dark after 3days in the towel. I'd plant that one with a tail small is fine, curious are these homemade seed?

SoOrbudgal I thought same about the colour, these weren’t that colour before I put in the paper towel, I would take a guess it being the hydrogen peroxide making it that colour

Hdk40, I clean and soak my seeds in plain water pH adjusted to 5.0-5.5. If the seeds are soaked in hydrogen peroxide too long, it could cause harm to the seeds (other than the bleaching of the color). The pHed water at 5.0, is sufficient to remove or render harmless any bacteria on the surface of the seeds. if You want to use the H2O2 on the seeds, do not soak them for very long (two minutes or less) and rinse them in plain water. In any case do not use any H2O2 stronger than 3% solution (the strength of the first aid type found at the store).
            Good luck with your 'sprouting'.

Nearly started from scratch I don’t think I’d bother with hydrogen peroxide on the next batch…will press on with these for abit the root looks pretty healthy on one at least…appreciate all the advice, looking forward to getting a few up and running
