COCO COIR Best practice regarding watering/fertigation?

After coming across Hydro Halos online, i started doing some reading and came across an article on another site (not sure if I can say which, so I won't at this point) on the topic of fertigation for plants in Coco/perlite.

The main gist of it was: If you're growing in Coco, you shouldn't let the medium dry out and should water/fertigate as soon as the surface looks slightly damp (up to 5x a day depending on environment).

The idea is that because the Coco/perlite mix is so aerated and holds moisture but is also free-draining that you can give a more constant supply of nutes in a somewhat similar fashion to hydro, and therefore get better yield than once-a-day or every other day waterings.
You still water to runoff to avoid nute/salt buildup but because you're watering more frequently the medium is 'wetter' so the waterings are a smaller volume and you don't really use much more than you would otherwise.
Of course you have to have the pots elevated and a way to remove runoff to avoid it being reabsorbed into the pot.

    Does this sound legit?

It seems to make sense on the face of it, but I'm skeptical about how much of a difference it will make in the end.

I'm only in my second grow and throughout the first and this far through the second I've always followed the advice on GWE about waiting until the Coco is dry to my second knuckle before watering/feeding again. Because the lower parts of the pot still have some moisture it stands to reason that there are still available nutes at the time of feeding so the plant hasn't 'gone hungry' in the interim.

Most of my knowledge is purely theory on this as I'm only 1.5 grows in, but it'd be interesting to see what you journeyman/master pharmers think about it!

My understanding with straight coco an perilite you keep the soil moist at all times. I use a mix of composted and coco coir plus other organic additives plus perilite, mix it myself keep it in a sealed tote. I use risers also, don't know about the system but i've seen it.

Hydro halos can be made at home with 2 short pieces of tubing, a L and T connector, holes drilled in tubing. As far as the coco for cannabis site and the fertigation theory goes, not telling you what to do, my experience was this. I started at that site before I found this site. Through trial and error I found that the fertigation theory was flawed. It is a PITA, requiring a pump, distribution system, timer, and drain system that is automatic, or hand watering every few hours. Even being retired, I did not have the time or patience for hand watering every few hours. I started building that system and later realized that no mater how much automation I built into it, water still needed to be hauled and nutes mixed every day. A larger reservoir could be added, but with out a plumed drain- and spent nutes should not be put in a septic or sewer system, the waste still needed to be removed daily. I just didn't see the payback for such a system that was so complicated and needed so much attention to run vs hand watering. I found that feeding water and nutes once a day was adequate for all but the most hot days when the plants may need a second water helping in the afternoon. Multiple feedings were not needed, and this year I have transitioned to skipping feedings for a day once or twice a week. My opinion is that what ever makes my life easier with out compromising quality is good. Just some insight from someone who has been there, done that. In retrospect with 3 years experience with this, watering so frequently will cause problems, algae growth, environment too wet, fungus gnats, conditions ripe for WPM and bud rot. I could see how the fertigation might work in a large scale production setup with one strain growing, maybe.

Don't worry, be happy, grow sticky buds.

Addition- If you setup the automatic system, you are limiting yourself if individual plants need individual requirements, unless you go back to hand watering.

Haha Ckbrew yeah that's literally how I thought things would go down if I tried it, and I'd just end up wasting time and money. Your DIY halos sound good though, I think I'll make them and just gravity feed them with that once a day. That way I can do my Scrog training and maintenance while I'm feeding them 👍🏼

I follow the fertigation technique but like you, CKBREW, I have made adjustments. I will definitely agree that keeping coco moist is a game changer. Before I would let it dry out, no more. The difference is amazing. Will stay with this.
