After several failed attempts at cloning using the typical methods, I decided to try air layering. Worked on my first try. Didn't use Sphagnum moss - just a rapid rooter, cloneX, cereal box liner, and aluminum foil.

Lots of hits on Google, but short answer is: cloning while the cutting is still attached to the mother plant. One tip I found that isn't in all the videos was to make sure you include a branch node. That person noticed that all of his clones developed roots there first. I didn't actually try to cut the cambium and instead just held the knife perpendicular to the stem and just scratched back and forth all around down to the cambium.
It’s trusted that air layering goes back to old China and Japan, where air layering bonsai was a prominent propagation technique.
