    Harvest timing and yield

Finally chopped the third of three plants growning since sprouting Sept. 25. Had to wait for CBD Cream and Cheese extra weeks. Click image for larger version

I made the mistake, at week4 of flowering, of leaving extra lights on all night, pushing the temp up to @90’ F and @0 humidity. The other 2 plants fox tailed just a little, but the C+C started growing foxtails all over the place just as I started to see a few amber bud trichomes. Even fox tailing down under where light won’t penetrate. So I waited ‘till the new pistils started to turn rusty, and the new clear trichomes went a bit cloudy. The end result was @ 8.5 oz total for all 3 plants when dry. That is @ 240 grams with 200W. LED in 20”x36” in “super soil”. About 6 colas (trained to the outside) grew to 9-11”. It looks to me like this C+C is prone to fox tailing at least more so, than the other two grown in the same space?!? I guess. Live and learn. Recent GWE news letter covered this (foe tailing) topic for which I’m thankful to Sirius and nebula. Also thanks for all the help and encouragement y’all!

bboyfromwaybackSoOrbudgal Yes, in cross your fingers good eye SBG, I just came back from inspecting and removing bud rot. Wow! I think I got it all. Went back over buds after separating, washing the remainder (lemon juice, then peroxide), and hanging. Took some more then off to the wood fire thy went. Click image for larger version

. So much for 11” buds! All the biggest, heaviest had it. Think I was ruthless enough. I’ll keep on checking. It was 56% H and It may have gotten in the 40s last night temp was. So I went up with the temp and down with the RH. It’s not good...but I found out that even working to run RH in the 30%-40% range. Thanks again for that catch SBG!

Well that’s water under the bridge or buds into the fireplace. I’ve examined it again and found a bud or 2 more to toss. Anything that looks brown, white or gray is gone. The buds are drying faster now separated. I can now see the value of bud drying racks where you can separate each bud. Looking forward to TLC testing. Trying it now in my Vap... Cheesy and very relaxing.

I did an experiment with my vape. Measured out 1g ground bud. Vaped it, saving all the PVB and being careful not to miss any. Weigh afterward. There was a 20% decrease in weight. Compare that with your TLC test.

            Thank for your interest!
Right, the TLC hot test instructions call for dry weight. They suggest: (Dry 150 mg – 200 mg Cannabis for 4 - 5 minutes in a preheated oven or toaster oven at 300° F. You can air dry or use a dehydrator to dry your samples. Most samples contain 5 to 15% water air drying is the best.)
Ive thought that previously vaped weed is like decarbed weed. Is that right? I mean if the vap is set to @220-230’ for 1/2 hr or so isn’t that almost the same as decarboxylating in the oven for 1/2hr?
Also, I was wondering, If cannabinoids don’t bond with water, and vaping produces water vapor from the bud, then how does that cause the desired effect? I’ve noticed that it takes a heap more for vaping to get the same effect as toking, No?

Vaping dry flowers is done at about 200* C or 392* F. This accomplishes decarb, and also causes the cannabanoid containing resins in the trichs to off gas or vaporize with out causing combustion of the cellulose contained in the plant. So the weight loss is from the good stuff and any residual water. That makes PVB decarbed, but not containing the majority of the desired resins. I have heard people say they use PVB for edibles and I have never tried it. That said, the majority of the good stuff has been depleted. To me it smells like the dregs / water fraction (really bad) from making butter and is not worth messing with. If you are familiar with the "lick the bowl" theory of getting it all, I think recovering anything left in PVB as licking to hard.

As far as smoking vs vaping and how much it takes, I have to disagree. On a weight to weight bud comparison of smoking vs vaping, vape will deliver a higher total dose. Many first time vape users think this, but once you get used to the technique you will see the true difference. It has to do with the kenetics of distribution of the THC in the body. Smoking absorption is a bit faster due to the first intense large dose delivered, so it will create a faster "rush" of THC. That said, smoking also destroys a significant portion of the THC during the combustion process due to high heat, delivering a lower total dose. Vape avoids the loss from high heat. Vape takes a slightly longer time for absorption and distribution, but the total dose is greater. If you allow a longer time for evaluation of the effects, say 15 minutes post dosing, as opposed to smoking, you will come to the conclusion that vaping is superior to smoking in terms of total dose and efficiency of dose distribution, and effects delivered.

Cannabanoids are fat soluble not water soluble. When vaped, the oil fraction and the water residual fraction off gas together, but since they are in a gas form, they have little effect on each other.

Thanks Brewbro! That explains a lot. I’ll give vaping a try at higher temps. Just don’t want to smoke burned stuff due to some lung issues. I’ve tried to make PVB tea with some cream but can’t stand that “lick the bowl” taste. Yes I see what you mean. Last night I vaped some bud at @230’ F. for @1/2 hr. Then, an hr. or so later it was lights out for about 10 hours. Thanks much for the info.

You have to get to about 250* C to start combustion. I start at 195* C and then maybe increase to 200 or 210, depends on the bud variety. You will know when you are done by when the vape starts to get a toasted/burnt popcorn taste.
