    biodegradable pots

    hi all.
    quick question to the members.
instead of using solo cups for starting off your seeds, then having to transplant them, has anyone ever used biodegradable pots, the cardboard type. was thinking of using these.
any info from someone who has tried, i would be grateful for any info
    tia

i used to as well, was just thinking it would be easier to start them off indoors then transplant them in one go, with out strees or shock

ID:	545273My grows have been in soil. I start my seeds out in Rapid Rooters. They stay there until the root s come out the bottom. Then I move them to the cardboard pot until their leaves reach the edges of the container. Then I move them to their final home. Haven't lost any plants using this method.

If you use those make sure to bury the whole pot that "cardboard" needs to be well moistened in order to deterioratel. I do not recommend the " cow pots " made with composted poop, for my grows it was way to hot for seedlings when the pot leeched out burn them.

did the roots punch through the base of these pots easily, or did you cut away the base for them.
also did it take long for the pot to break down.
the reason im thinking of trying this is, all my growing is outdoors, so i want to give the seeds the best start i can, by starting them off in doors.
              sorry for all the questions

I cut away the bottom and make sure the pot is wet enough. Haven't noticed how long it takes the pots to break down though.

                  final question, if that's ok
do you cut away the base before you plant the seeds, in case of damaging roots when cutting the base or after before transplanting,
                  again, thanks for your patience

                    well.
i just ordered 8cm biodegradable coir fibre pots.
going to give them a try.
plan is, to start off my seeds in doors, keep them there for two weeks, or there abouts, then transplant the pot to their final pots outdoors.

Match the light cycle outside or you may have early flowers then reveg when you go outside with them.

I cut the bottoms away at transplant. Good point about being careful with the roots but it. Hasn’t been a problem.

I used the Jiffy pots once, but didn't like time it took to biodegrade. Also tried the solo cups, but made a mess because I'm horrible at transplanting. I settled on Jiffy pellets, removing top and bottom mesh and transferring to final pot when taproot emerges. Usually a day or two after sprout. Just what's functional for me.

Last 2 grows the ones I've used have still been at the beginning of the root mass when I pulled them out. 4 so far. They don't mind growing thru it, but yeah one season isn't going to degrade them at all.
Learned a lot this year. pH and whiteflies are issues that need controlling. Maybe an auto over January.....hmmmm...
