    Ready to flip?

    This is My First Grow

I transplanted these Pennywise clones on October 1st and I believe they were just a month old. I had many problems throughout October trying to dial in the environment and soil nutrients. A number of the issues stressed them and slowed growth, but they have been growing pretty well since mid November.
The only thing I’ve done to them was FIM them at about 10” tall and periodically removed any very large leaves that were covering tips.

I just received my Secret Jardin Propagator 90 tent to hold a mother and clones. I’m going to use the most vigorous of the 4 plants for the mother.
So this next week I get the mother into the small 36”w x 24”d x 40”h and start some clones.

When do you think would be a good time to flip the switch to the 12/12? Once the mother is out or once the clones start to root?
Anyone know how many tips I should have with the single FIM?

    Nice start.
Assuming the clones you used are identical, any of those plants would be a viable source for some cuts to make a new clone.
Since you are going to use a mother/clone tent, this would be a perfect opportunity to make clones.
I use a 4x4 tent for pheno hunts using coco in 3 gal bags and only let them get to the 5th node-top for a cutting and flip to flower.
They normally only have the first 3 nodes when flipped and this is what they end up like: https://photos.app.goo.gl/2bHrw8imS1PJnkkz8
That SF4000 is better suited for a 4x4 footprint, so I'd plan accordingly.
I'm not familiar with that strain, but I rarely let indoor plants get more than about 14" above the soil/net lid when I flip.
Even at that most of my girls will triple in height.

The strain is a cross between Harlequin and Jack the Ripper. It’s a medium size plant with a 1:1 ratio and very popular here in the Pacific NW, USA. This strain gets me to sleep through the night.

The specs on the sf4000 state it outputs 1217 umoles/sec.
A 4x4 is 1.5 square meters in area.
That means it will be able to provide enough photon output to achieve a ppfd average of 800 over the canopy(1217/1.5=811.3 umole/s/m2)
A 5x5 is 2.32square meters. That same 1217 umoles spread out over that area would net a 524 average ppfd across the canopy.
It's a big difference in intensity. The plants will respond better to more light.

The two testers in that pic are Primal Punch f2's from medgrower. I have my upstairs room running a mono-crop of the pheno on the left.
      Gonna be outrageous.

Holy crap! Is that one of yours?
how long did that veg for?
There are 3 things you must check everyday when growing in hydro:
    1) Water level (How much h2o is she drinking in 24hrs)
    2) pH level (change over 24hrs)
    3) ppm/EC level (How much food is she eating in 24hrs)

Those were Northern Souls veg'd for 6 weeks.
Just another point on my learning curve-bigger isn't always better.
This is what I started flower with about 16" tall at this point.

Damn...didn't realize my leg is in the background.
Sometimes it's easier for me to take it off when I'm in the garden.

Here we are 10 days later and I just finished setting up my Propagator tent. I moved the one with the darkest leaves and most symmetrical shape to this tent as well as the basil and African violet.

I can’t get over how fast the basil started growing this past week. If you saw the photos of this plant in my first grow introduction post you would be amazed how well this is doing. Saved from near death.

I took it downstairs last night and when she saw the leaves as big as the palm of my hand she was stunned. I said I’m glad your happy because now I’m going to cut it up to clone it many times, LOL. She wasn’t amused.

        FRIDAY, 01 JAN 2021
It just turned 01 Jan 2021, exactly 3 months, Oct 01 when I placed my clones into the big tent. Here they are today.
An observation, 2 each of the 4 plants, all Pennywise grew and developed the same way. It was like having two sets of identical twins. Two grew faster and larger in the beginning, then the other two have almost caught up. These original smaller ones are both darker green, it might be hard to see but it’s the one in the back right (this photo) and in the Propagator tent. I have rotated both position in the tent and the pots themselves on their stands.
Is this what phenotypes is all about? Am I experiencing two different phenotypes? They were all supposed to be from the same mother.

Yesterday 01 Dec 2021 I changed the light timer to 12/12 (7am-7pm lights out).
For me in the unheated, uninsulated shop it’s best to have the lights on at night to help with heat.

I lowered the AV Infinty high humidity setting from 61% to 51% according to my handy little GWE reference image I made.
I left my two heater Inkbird controllers settings the same since they maintain a 69-75F temp.
I brought my SF4000 from 80% dim to 100%. I saw an SF4000 grow on YouTube and the guy told me he runs his from 50-70% for veg and 100% for flower.

        COMPOST TEA
I just gave everyone a large dose of compost tea. They love this stuff!

Aerate Three gallons pH adjust water, 6.00, for 24 hrs (removes chlorine, etc.)
        Then add;
        1. Three Tbsp Natures Living Soil (heaping)
        2. Three Tbsp Un-sulphured Molasses
        3. Three 1/2 tsp Seaweed Extract
Aerate for another 24 hrs. The foam (ferment/brew) will rise and fall, then is ready to water.

For your next grow, put your lights at 100% as soon as you feel the plants can take it. Light is food...don’t starve them. 👍

        CO2?

Now how big of deal is supplemented CO2? Will I really need it? I’m a home brewer and have a 20# aluminum tank with gas in it. I also have two steel ones, a 5# and 20#. All for my kegs.

Looking at the strain database it looks like they should be ready around March 1st - 7th.
        Height: Short to Medium
        Yield: Medium
        Recommended for Indoor and Outdoor.
This strain is super powdery mildew resistant.
Best way to grow: Topped once, limited stretch on most phenotypes.
        Harvest: 60-67
        Sat/Ind: 20/80
Hybrid: Harlequin x Jack The Ripper

First thing to ask yourself is if you need CO2 added. Generally speaking, there is enough ambient CO2 that plants are just fine without adding more. Case in point....plants growing outdoors grow just fine from atmospheric CO2 levels (and chances are the CO2 in your home/garage/shed is the same as outside).

Is your VPD in the correct range to make use of the extra CO2? Is your room sealed to keep the CO2 in there? How often are you cycling old air out and fresh air into the grow space (if its a sealed space)?

I love the technical details of growing, but i can’t yet see the benefits for additional costs and hassle of adding CO2 for the minimal returns gained. Sure...you might get an extra few percentage points in yield, but at what cost? You also might NOT get any extra gain in yield if the ambient CO2 was already enough.

Just some food for thought from my perspective.

          Cheers

Your final comments are how I’m leaning. The tent being outside in my large shop is currently getting new air from one of my GGT little windows at the bottom. I have the Velcro cover pulled up some to create a roll in it like a tube with two open ends. It’s on the back side about a foot from a wall so the light when the shop lights are on barely gets back there.
I probably should hook up some duct hose to one of the sock holes down there to reduce any light.

Tonight I just lowered the SF4000 so the reading at the top tips is 45,000 to 60,000 lux on my Dr. Meter LX1332B. I love this new model meter the head rotates like an owl head so you can angle the screen away from the light for easy reading and it works in one hand. Since owning it, it has removed much of the stress and the guessing. One of my favorite investments in this project.

The plants are more dark green than most of my photos show. Here’s a photo of the mother in a room with overhead and lamp lights on. The 3 in the flowering tent are similar but look more yellow when photos are shot under the SF4000.

When do you start seeing the first signs of flowering?

I ordered a 5 pack of these small pruners I used to use in bonsai. They are very light weight, no breaking parts, fit in your palm and sharp as a politician’s tongue. They are great for crafts also.
            https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

These other tools are also handy. The larger concave branch cutters have an curve in the blade that sucks down into the branch making the cut bowl-like. This allows the outer grow layer to collapse into the bowl, in some cases closing the wound up completely, preventing rot.

May i say that i admire your devotion to your grow and the research an updated tech your using. I understand most of what new stuff your using but the Co2 i'm not so sure is necessary. I'm not so good at explaining why only that i believe that you don't really need it. I think your grow looks great so far real healthy and lush. The clones you revived are a example of your care to growing well. Any day those hairs will show now, well done

Thank you SoOrbudgal and yes I figured I’d give it a go without and see what happens. At worst I’ve read I would be out a few extra grams. I’ve always been a nature guy, worked at a nursery/landscape when I was young, had a bonsai collection and a small vineyard/orchard on an acre. Plants talk to me and I too them. I’m looking forward to creating bonsai mothers.
I have worked with technology for 33 years and love my hardware/software. I’m a couple years from retirement and look forward to having a raised bed garden. I’ve been reading about plants/vegetables that are naturally compatible with cannabis.

Today I noticed they are starting to get those wispy leaves on the tips. Any day now. I did one thing two days ago, I hope is fine. I swapped my 12 hrs dark from the daytime to night (10pm-10am). So the shop is in total darkness and I could visit my plants in light during the day. I started the 18/6 with the dark during the day, due to utilizing it’s heat for when it’s coldest. But now that I’v stabilized the heat I’m not too worried. It’s did well when the temps were into the mid 20Fs last month.

That scope is garbage. I had bought 2 of them and would not recommend. They are built very poorly and caused a ton of frustration trying to get good quality look at trichs.
Better option is a jewelers loop or one of the little clip-on magnifiers for cell phones.

I’m not sure what was wrong with YYCannabis’ two usb microscopes but this thing is AMAZING! It was uncharged out of the box so I plugged it in and by the time I read the instructions I turned it on, selected it in the Photo Booth app per instructions, turned the LED light all the way up, set it on my desk and turned the focus until it was.
My desk top is a resin with an ash wood look.
WOW and I haven’t even got started. My hands are a bit shaky so I’m going to adapt it to my small tripod to set next to the buds. I can’t wait to show this to my 3 yr old grandson.

                My flowers have started!

I love wearing my Donegan headband magnifier whe looking over my plants
I use them for leatherwork and they’ve been fun to wear in this grow.
The close ups are by laying my iPhone 8 on the lenses frame so those are subjects of shaky hands.
