How often should I prune my plant?

I notice lots of new growth all the time on my plant, some of it seems to do more harm than good. Some branches on the top block light going to the bottom tops/branches. How often should I prune leaves and defoliate the plant? I'm still in veg. I just want the plant to grow larger and I feel that removing tiny branches/leaves that block tops is going to divert more energy to the branches I want to see take off.

I j prune my plants several times during their growth. I will remove some of the large fan leaves that tend to thicken up the plant about five weeks into my grow. I will then remove foliage several times during the flowering state but only enough to allow the bud sites to receive light. Leaves are good, don't become a slasher.
