I think there are too many strains.

I think cannabis needs its own version of the American Kennel Club, to curb rampant crossbreeding that will lead to uniformity, and encourage preservation of excellence within established breeds.

Agreed, but good luck. Aside from the orgy of genetics, the inbreeding and the plethora of unstable crosses, many people think they have a strain that they actually don't. Meaning, many people who thought they had the real sour diesel, did not actually have a sour diesel. There are some shady clone salesman in every corner of the market.

You've got to be careful with inbreeding for a few reasons, 1- because you narrow the gene pool. Cookies as an example is know to throw bananas. It's also a super popular strain and has spawned 100's of new strains, some very popular. But they all now carry the genetic potential to throw hermies, and many of these designer strains based off of cookies do. 2- The more you backcross a strain, the higher chances of loosing vigor in the offspring. Which isn't desired and why you here people refer to 'hybrid vigor".

Yes but feminizing is more to blame for hermies than inbreeding. Cinderella 99......

Feminizing is definitely producing a lot of herms. It's a low percentage of overall plants, but its still a big number.

The closest thing to what you're asking for (in the public domain) is the phylos galaxy - https://phylos.bio/galaxy/ and https://phylos.bio/search?q=gg4

They took DNA samples from thousands of strains and mapped their relationship. Now, the ethics of how they got there and the breeders they screwed over, thats another, easily searchable story, but the galaxy is pretty cool. It does come with caveats though.

On a private commercial level, this work has been ongoing for years. It is the race to patent Cannabis plants / cultivars / chemovars.

Strains, right, sure it is, or is it just another hybrid, cross this with that and name it well and sell the hell out of it.
There are folks doing landraces and trying to keep them pure, many of them have already been lost and thats sad.

Thanks for all the insight! I've been interested in 'landraces' for some back to basics genetics. And I didn't know that about feminizing. Very interesting reason to use regular seeds instead of fem.

I definitely have, currently sitting out due to corona concerns but will return in the spring.

You can definitely tell😂 I’ve worked most of my life as a plant manager in industrial food manufacturing, and while the subject matter is completely different, the approach is very similar. I appreciate the logical, risk assessment/hazards analysis based approach 👍

Lots of similarities I imagine. Dealing with mass scale and cleanliness is mission critical. I prefer the same approaches as you. It's really aspects that can be applied to all areas of life. Even though I enjoy trowing myself 20 feet in the air on a snowboard, I've still done my risk assessment - land it or die
