Non Auto Strains For Mini Grow with Three Foot Clearance

I'm setting up a mini grow and I'm using the mini grow tutorial on this site as a guide. My set up, like the set up in the tutorial, will be three feet tall. The tutorial suggests using an auto strain because they don't get tall, but I'm toying with the idea of using a shorter non auto strain and just starting the light cycle early. Specifically I was thinking about using the strain Critical. I'm curious to get some feedback about this plan, as well as any non auto strain recommendations.

The tutorial is correct plants don't under stand 'three feet' 'height' or any other Human concept

Yes I think that photo period seeds can be used for a small space. Make sure to plan and expect space needed for a stretch before flipping the lights.
