Grow 5: A tulip by any other name...

... will not get you this high!

I'm excited to soon add Mokum's Tulip by Dutch Passion to the garden. It's a new (2019) strain with an enticing backstory. From the breeder's website:

Dutch Passion's Head of Genetics came across a very special pheno of Gelato on one of his travels. The plant had an amazing candy smell and some beautiful blue tones in the leaves. The sparkling buds were rock hard, the Head of Genetics was amazed by the rich taste which was exactly the same as the deliciously sweet and appealing aroma of the buds on the plant. He knew that this exceptional individual would be outstanding base material for another elite Dutch Passion cross.

This Gelato pheno arrived in “Mokum” (the old Hebrew/Yiddish word for Amsterdam) and was crossed with a vigorous Sherbet individual that also leans to the sweet side of the Cookie family. The Sherbet had a terpene-rich aroma, heavy yields and a particularly powerful effect.

Amsterdam became famous for tulips back in the day and the smell of this new creation reminded us of a very sweet smelling red tulip. The name “Mokum's Tulip” quickly came to mind. This XXL yielding strain is a must for your empty cookie jar.

My plan is to grow 4 of these alongside 4 gorilla zkittlez by Barney's Farm in an 8x4. They will start in coco under CMH light and will eventually transition to LED for flower.

Thought others may be interested to follow along given it's a new strain. Feel free to say hi and follow along

I’m old and cynical as hell. Some stuff looks more like PR spin than truth. It is a cool story though if true.

Any idea what to expect for thc/CBD?
There are 3 things you must check everyday when growing in hydro:
    1) Water level (How much h2o is she drinking in 24hrs)
    2) pH level (change over 24hrs)
    3) ppm/EC level (How much food is she eating in 24hrs)

That's an interesting thread, alltatup. Thanks for sharing. I understand what you're saying; almost every strain I really enjoy comes from OG Kush.

Here's hoping these turn out to be more than clever marketing.

ocgreen I'm all for the new genetics with higher THC content!!!!! I recently bought a new strain from Humboldt, Dr. Greenthumb's Em-Dog, because they said 27% THC. So I try the new ones, too. I just don't get all dazzled by the extreme graphics, trumpets and fanfare they make on Seedsman to advertise their new strains.

Looking forward to seeing that Em-Dawg grow journal when it comes time for you to plunk those seeds, @alltatup.

As for my beautiful tulips, they went from the shot glass to the rapid rooters under CMH a few minutes ago. I'm excited!

Perhaps tulips, ie. tulip-mania is a very good comparison to today's seed market and some pricing!
Speaking of true strains, stumbled onto this article yesterday, thought it was interesting.

Hey SoOrbudgal I'm planning to go 70/30 coco/perilite mix in 5 gallon fabric pots.

In terms of number of plants, after some recent consideration, I think I'm just going to do the 4 Mokum's Tulip in the 8x4 and wait to grow the gorilla zkittlez.

Mokum's Tulip is supposed to get taller than anything I've grown in the past so I'm thinking LST will make 4 fill the 8x4. What do you think?

Sounds great. I was just reading about that strain on Alchamenys? Not sure of spelling, I read a lot but retain little. I'm also looking at the Barny's gorilla zkittlez for outdoor next season, never to early for me to look at next season. I believe you will do well with just the 4 much easier at least for me it is. I got 4 going into 8wks from sprout now in the tent. I've topped and LST spread and tied down now to my liking. Think your going to have fun and your plan sounds great.

Lowered light from 28" to 24" based on what I'm diagnosing as a leggy seedling. Anyone else agree or otherwise know why one is looking so weird and twisted?

There is passive cool air intake and a 4" exhaust fan but nothing blowing so bad it would cause that.

Thinking I will transfer that one to a solo cup with mild nute coco when I get time later.

I'm not sure why ocgreen. I start mine under T5 or 54watt cfl depends on how many i'm starting. But I have them 2-3" from light. Maybe squeeze that cube together tighten soil around it more??

Thanks SoOrbudgal I went back and forth about whether to use my tried and true CMH or my new seedling light:

DuroLux DL822S T5 2Ft 2 Fluorescent Lamps Grow Lighting System with 5000 Lumens and 6500K Full Spectrum and Super Low Profile 3.5" Wide Reflector

I chose the CMH because I was scared of messing something up with a new light. And here I am messing things up with the CMH 😅

Do you think this T5 light would be ok for seedlings in the future?

Can't tell from photo but it's really neat to see how the first set of leaves from one of the Mokum's Tulip has a reddish blue tinge.

And as you probably noticed from photo, I ended up plunking 4 Gorilla Zkittlez two days ago. 4/4 above ground and thriving so far.

Plan is to grow so much this winter that I can close up the garden for the summer. Last summer was my first summer growing and I found that the extra hassle and expenses from things like dehumidifier, air conditioner and so on isn't worth it (to me).

        #10
Yes I don't do tent in summer so I totally understand, we do just the opposite. I do a big grow or friggin try to in summer and just run some autos in winter but this summer flopped with quality and quantity so i'm running 4 more photos right now, were gonna need it. I think that's a great idea and I wish you much luck.

1/4 Mokum's Tulip didnt make it. I think I killed it (broke tap root) when I tried to peek inside rooter early on to see if it was sprouting. Lesson learned.

Everyone else is thriving so far. 6 went from solo cup to air pot today.

Everyone is doing well for the most part. Some were maybe exposed to a little too much light because nodes are really close.

              One Gorilla Zkittlez is twisted/deformed:

I think they look grand. Yes that little tulip seems to have great structure. I seem to get into trouble with gorilla strains, they are kinda touchy with ferts. at least for me.

I topped the biggest Mokum's Tulip at 5th node when it had 6 going on 7 nodes. Now I'm thinking I should have topped above 3rd node because the distance between 3 and 4 is so big in comparison to 1-3. See photo

do you think I should have topped just below 4th node instead?
if so, would it be ok to do that today if I topped only yesterday?

Or should I just leave it alone?

Everyone else is doing fine. Planning to top everyone at the 5th node when they have 6 going on 7 but let me know if you have a better recommendation
