Most competitions have similar results. It's all about the entourage. Terpenes have been known to work synergistically with thc and other cannabanoids.
THC content is more of a baseline for me... it's not the biggest factor for selecting a strain but it is somewhat important to me. -
With all the new high THC strains coming along (as high as 30%) I say why? Back in the day, 15 to 20 was considered high and every body got stoned.I know everybody handles it differently. I would be kicked in the Ass for days using that high percentage and probably be paranoid and anxiety ridden until I feel into a two day sleep. LOLComment

The potency is subjective in my experience. 30% THC just means that 30% of all the cannabinoids in the plant are THC. But it doesn't mean there's a lot of cannabinoids.
Let's say you have 1 mg of cannabinoids in an ounce (I don't know if that's a realistic amount, but just as an example), and 30% THC, which would give you 0.3 mg of THC. However, if there was 5 mg of cannabinoids in that ounce with 10% THC, you'd end up with 0.5 mg of THC, which is actually more total THC even though it's a lower percentage. So the TOTAL cannabinoid content is REALLY important to potency but they don't even test for it.
To add another wrench, different cannabinoids can moderate the effects of THC. For example adding more CBD makes the THC much less psychoactive. There are also likely other cannabinoids that do things we don't understand, which helps explain the entourage effect.
The fact is, the more you smoke the more messed up you get. You can smoke very potent weed, but just a little, and get the same level of "messed up" as smoking a lot more weed that is less potent.
I think that's why we're going for highest potency as growers. It minimizes the amount of plant matter you need to smoke, but you can still choose your level of "stoned-ness". -

I completely agree. I've had bud that tested at 20% THC that was waaaay stronger than bud that tested at 30% THC. The percentage also has a lot to do with which part of the plant you test. A dispensary owner told me that when they do testing, the highest THC percentage results come from the larfy buds that have lots of trichomes but very little bud. He said they'd send samples from all over the plant and then keep the test that scored the "best" when it came to advertising. But those buds don't necessarily seem the most potent when you're smoking.
I feel like the percentages are more of a very general ballpark when it comes to potency, and are most helpful when you're looking for CBD levels. But other than that I don't really pay attention to THC percentage above about 15 or 18%. After that I think the potency becomes a lot more subjective!Comment
