DIY is definitely part of the hobby. I think it also has some roots in staying under the radar. I remember the first lights I bought came in a brightly printed box..."Grow Lights" in neon blinking on my front porch. So I bring in a bucket of compost under the cover of night, and sew my own cloth pots from landscape fabric, burn incense when I defoliate.

I think we're on a similar harvest schedule. It will be cool to see what comes.

Hey redbeard here's what I'd recommend for your space. Jump it to 8 "B" type Vero29s and skip the red supplement. If you want more light, do 3 units of 3 "C" for 9 total, so 3 drivers.
I use the Bridgelux Vero 29s for several reasons. 1) they are the most efficient watt to light output
      2) easier to use, no clamp, the SE series doesn't even require soldering.
Reflectors are good I think, but you can build and use without them.

Supplier: Items Total per supplier w/shipping
      Digi-Key LED arrays $215.40
      3 β€œC” type Gen7 Vero 29
      4 β€œD” type Gen7 Vero 29
      Arrow electronics $261.86
      2 HLG320 drivers, 1.4A
      2 Pot. For dimming
      3 toggle switches
      2 control boxes
      2 power cords
      Arrow 2 rs-15-12 fan-drivers $16.48
      CDI thermal management $113.30
      7 IceLED heatsinks
      Rapid LED 7 Reflectors & clamps $67.35
Direct Voltage red light componants $56.39
      4 heat sinks
20 red 3w LEDs on star
      2 mini LED drivers
      Lowes Hardware $38.31
      aluminum for frame
      eye bolts
Odds & Ends wire, screws, etc $12.00
      TOTAL $781.09

Thanks my friend love the diy myself. Only on my third inside grow, first 2 with small lights this time a 1000watt hid. Stupid heat I can manage it but the extra ac /dehumidifier adds as lot . Had rather spend the money on a better light than electric bill. Thnx again.

It's not exact, but I think of it this way. A $500 , 1000watt hid will cost $1000/year in electrical, bulbs, cooling. A $1000 COB will cost you 500/yr in electrical. The first year is even, after that you save 500 a year.

Day 44, or is it 45? Such sweet smells. Like dreaming in a cool summer meadow.
Always thinking what I will do differently next time
      1. 3 plants instead of 4
      2. Grow them taller before going to flower
      3. Start defoliation sooner, much sooner
      4. Add far red light to mix
      5. Work castings in soil mix

      Pics:
Tangerine Dream about 2 weeks from finish
Nirvana PPP about 3.5 weeks away,
Packed back in the tent with their buddies

Thanks so much. This is the most fun I've had in years. And it might have taken me a life time to get this far into it without the years of sharing of the community of growers that have preceded us. I feel like a welcomed passenger. Truly amazing.

Day 62 of flower. The harvest begins. The first Tangerine Dream has almost stopped producing new pistils and a few trichs taking on color. So I cut the top 6 inches and will let the lower buds fatten for a week or so. The lower buds are still producing new pistils and due to the heavy defoliation a few weeks ago fattening very nicely.
I'm not in a rush to get another set going, so I'm going to get what I can from this group.
first pic is mature tops before harvest, second pic is the plants after tops are removed. About 20 plus servicable buds ready to get full light.
Third pic is the next step toward the Tangerine Dream... About 12 percent of the harvest.

Thanks Tika. Yes plans for the next grow forming. I'm kinda waiting to see if I like the PPP. It is super easy to grow, and the pheno that I cloned has a beautiful growth habit with long slender leaves and wide, open branching. If it is the right stuff I'll switch over to a whole tent of just that.

Although not commonly heard of here in California...everyone I know loves the PPP! If you switch to a tent full you will be having some serious bud!!!!
