    White Widow Auto problems

Hello everyone, great to arrive at this forum, cheers to all fellow growers.

First of all many thanks to GWE team for running this site, and to the supporting community.
I have been reading articles here for some time now, and decided to give it a shot and grow one.

I figured for my first time I would go with an autoflowering feminised white widow (I think it's from Hemp Brothers), to see whats what,

    I have the following setup:
    3'x3' grow tent
400W HID lamp in an enclosed aircooled reflector
Ventilation has max capability of around 250 CFM now, but used to be quite inefficient before.

I have been following a strategy of my own, which perhaps has proven bad.
I am not chasing maximum yelds or crazy efficiency, maybe someday I will, but now it's a single plant kinda laid back fun.
I am not saying I was aiming for organic grow, but wanted to grow in soil and avoid boosters and ferlitizers, so I use kind of regular soil that matched the pH range, mixed up with perlite, some coconut and a tad of dolomite, a mix I have often stumbled upon on several growing sites and forums.
I germinated in a peat cube (something like jiffy) and as soon as the seed has risen and opened the cotyledons I planted the cube in the soil, put it under 24/0 while keeping my light source somewhat higher than recommended because back then I was having temperature issues, and still the temp would be around 29-30 degrees most of the time
Temperatures now range from 22 to 26 sometimes 28 C RH@35-45%, and as a leftover of attempted temperature rescue the plant is now (still) on a 5/1 cycle, I thought I would also try watering or spraying the leaves only during dark.

First thing that I find a little strange about my grow is stretching. There is very very little stretch on my plant. I am currently in the middle of week 3 and new grow nodes keep popping up, and leaves are quite crowded. I am doing some lousy LST on it...

Finally, the issue I am having, for most time I thought it was related to my watering schedule which I have been testing different kinds of and still don't know...
When I go by the rule of checking the top inch or two of the soil, and watering whenever it gets dry, I end up watering at least once a day, I think my soil has proper drainage, each watering I use sprayer directly on the soil until runoff appears.

First one or two leaves, altho otherwise healthy appearance, started very gently curling side edges up, now about 1/1,5 weeks later those couple leaves have started yellowing on the edges with slight curling up, while a couple other leaves seem to have darker tips curling down (see photos), as in nitrogen toxicity, which I never assumed would be the case, since I am not using any nutrients and the soil is pretty ordinary with no gizmos pre-mixed. I tried adjusting the light because I thought perhaps was overfeeding with lumens, however doubtful because lamp was around 10" at lowest, now it is ~20" away.
The leaves feel a little stiff and harsh to the touch.

It's not the best photo, but it's all I have atm.

So am I overwatering, underwatering or what is going on I don't really know

Any comments or suggestions about that issue, as well as any other tips would be much appreciated.

      Firstsecond....

Go to the website and go to plant problems pictures...There is one very similar looking to yours.

Hey Green75, thanks for the pointers. I have of course browsed the cannabis problem picture site top to bottom several times before adding this post, on a different website too, and at this point it is similar to diagnosing yourself online - in 20 clicks or less you can learn you have some kind of cancer... Looking at those pictures I figured it can be anything from under/over watering, heat/light stress or also the mentioned nitrogen toxicity... I was also wondering about the extremely dense growth... Cheers!

      Firstsecond..

If ph is good and you are running no nutes than add some calmag... If it was mine that's what I would do...

Such dense growth is a blessing....

pH is ~6.0 if I should believe the meter I got my hands on today... Dunno about 'calmag' availability over here, will have to look... maybe a substitute, with similar ingredients...
So what are you suggesting the problem is in your opinion?

      #5
I would bet since you are running no nutes and and your ph is good than your missing all the spices off life...calcium, magnesium. I suggest reading up on theses type of deficiencies you might agree.

I'm just saying what I would do...No expert...nebulahaze will make her way here soon enough !!

The content of your soil nutrient profile is an unknown? From the picture it looks like maybe too much nitrogen but the fact that you are watering to run off would carry some of that down deeper into the soil. This is exactly why I am a hydro guy. I know my nutrient profile precisely.

One thing you should not do is mist your plants in the dark cycle this can promote mold and mildew problems; unless you have really low humidity in which case you should use a sonic humidifier (cheap and no extra heat).

Yeah, it sounds like total control over nutrient profile, but it is too synthetic for my taste, I will stay with soil, maybe for the next grow I will manage to produce some own supersoil, dunno, I just assumed a proper pH gardening soil can't be that terrible in terms of nutrients... I was planning on the humidifier, gonna probably get one today, also thanks for the tip on dark period misting, will do.

Hi, hope you're able to solve the issue soon. I'm kinda new to this also, but I just wanted to let you know that the White Widow Autoflower was my first grow (indoors under lots of CFL with coco coir), and it got quite large and productive, so the issue for you is not so much that particular strain. Good luck, it is a constant learning experience!

        The issue remains unsolved...
Following Green75's suggestion I was looking at calmags ingredients and recommended dosage and it seems everything it provides I provide at very least in the same amounts with mineral water apart from nitrogen (which is absent in mineral water), so it's the only potential deficiency I could think of, but I guess gardening soil should provide enough, not sure how much can watering flush out of the soil... also the symptoms don't exactly seem like it. The claw thing kinda comes and goes, so I guess I am going to ignore it for now and assume nitrogen levels are not an issue.

Other than that it might still be overwatering and/or heat stress, since the temp range could still be kinda high for an automatic plant... the yellow edges problem does seem to affect the oldest leaves tho...

I guess I am gonna try and reduce watering and see what happens, also try lower the temp a couple extra degrees somehow...

I am probably overreacting a little too

Would still appreciate any new suggestions...

I definitely understand your desire to grow in soil. Outdoors I am an Organic grower. It takes 5 or more years to develop really good living soil and the process never stops. I compost my own yard waste. I bring in loads of humus, mushroom compost, forest compost, bat shit, chicken shit, zoo do, blood meal, bone meal, alfalfa meal, gypsum and raisin stems. Not all at once you add this stuff over years in cycles. Crop rotation is also a big part of maintaining your soil. Well all of that is in order to support the soil microbes that make the chemicals available to the plant roots so it can grow. Chemical or Salt based nutrients just shortcuts that process. Yes, some constituents for flavor and odor may be missing in DWC. That remains to be seen though as I am currently adding something (organic based) I picked up at a recent trade show purported to eliminate that shortcoming in hydro grows. So far Mobina really smells good. After the smoke test I will report as to the flavor and then release the name of what I added if it works.

I feel like what you are going for is hyper-soil curious about effects, looking forward to your reports.

Ok, started doing some adjustments, I guess it will take some time for any effects to show, but meanwhile the troubled leaf sets like the ones on bottom left and on top of my attached picture have gotten a little worse, yellow edges increased slightly, yellow cracks appeared on some, and they break :/

Alright, so seems like definite N toxicity, because more and more leaves are classic claws with darker hint of green...
Which kinda keeps me puzzled, because as I mentioned, I am growing in soil and not adding any nutes so far... Thought it might be because of hot soil, but really don't know... the leaves that had the yellowish coloring are slowly slowly getting worse, or more or less keeping the same level, while some single new leaves grow with small burn like holes... there has been some pH fluctuation from ~6.0 to ~6,6 but I don't think that is a problem is it?

As I got some bushier growth, I gess the soil is much more in shade, so it gets dry much slower, ported some holes around the pot for better ventilation and also started watering when the soil seems drier than before...

Should I cover the soil with some gravel, like I put on the bottom of the pot, to reduce soil heating up? How else can I rid the nitrogen toxicity? Should I produce more runoff when watering to flush the soil or...?

Hi First second, you say you are using soil from outside? I get you used a couple things in it, now mind you I'm just saying, I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I'd say all bets are off on that soil! If you check the ppm on it after watering I would think it goes down every time. If so, you may well be feeding it in the near future.. just a wild guess here, like food for thought. I'd like to know how this turns out!

It looks like it might be suffering from a touch of overwatering or underwatering to me. What type of soil are you using and what's the temperature/humidity in there? You say you end up watering once a day because it's drying out, which sounds like either you may not be giving enough water at a time or the growing medium isn't holding on to it. Is it possible to get a picture of the plant in the setup under regular light? Overall it looks like it's doing pretty well!

                  Hey Sonny, hey NebulaHaze...
The soil I am using is 5.5 - 6.5 pH soil 'for vegetables' mixed with perlite to make it lighter and some coconut for better water retention and a little dolomite lime to raise the pH a bit...
It turned out today, that it has a considerable amount of natural humus mixed in from the start, so this probably introduced high amount of nitrogen into the soil?

In the beginning I had some struggle with heat and it could go up to 30C, sometimes 31C, so I guess that could heat up the soil and make it dry fast, cook the roots, and make the nitrogen toxicity even worse, maybe also reduce growth, because it is still dense enough to make the training harder... but I guess that is a good thing, just getting around and between the leaves is an adventure in the jungle...

Right now the temperatures are down to around 21-23 during 4 hrs dark, and climb up to reach maximum of 27-28. Humidity tends to stay higher than before at a more or less steady 42-47%, due to both lower temps and higher perspiration, I am watering much less often now (once every 2-3 days), as I mentioned before I guess the shaded soil and generally lower temps make it dry slower

Just starting week 4 and some nodes start showing pistils, so I guess veg is ending and I should keep the humidity a tad lower at 40% max?

So correct me if I am wrong, but I think I should not expect much of this grow, since most likely there is no way to rid all the nitrogen in the soil which will significantly influence bud formation...
Still gonna go through with it of course, still many things to learn from it, and am curious how it will end up...

                  Any thoughts, suggestions?
I know the training is far from elegant...
