    Perlite only?

Did some reading about growing in perlite only. How to fertigate, etc. I wanted to try one with some leftover perlite and bagseed . strictly as an experiment to see if i can keep it alive. I wanted to ask you guys if you ever tried it or had any advice??

take the perlite before using and flush qith lots of water using a strainer to wash of the perlite dust and particles too small, you want big chunks not sand like perlite.

Thanks 9fingerleafs ...I flushed it out well. got great drainage in a 1/2 gallon plastic jug i poked a million holes in. im gonna start the seed in a plug of dirt about an inch x an inch or so, right on top. after it pops ill wait a few days and start watering with a seedling strength nute mix ,which I have ph'd to a 5.5...which is what ive read a good ph is for this. Im not sure about two things...should I water til runoff even on 1 as little as a 4/5day old seedling? and since the perlite is the only medium , in theory I feel I could reuse runoff. Any thoughts on this? Thanks for entertaining my trials and im sure ...errors!

yeah i say for sure water til runoff to make sure the perlite gets wet and you definetly should reuse that water, perlite dries so fast that you would be loosing a fortune if you water drain to waste, you could use a little reservoir under the pot to catch the water and a little pump with a driper to water on top, im sure a mature plant will require several hand waterings a day

Agreed. Absolutely have to water to runoff or you will burn the plants!
I would think you will need to do very high frequency fertigation to keep plants happy. Like 3-4x during veg and 5-6x during flower.
Reuse runoff, but not forever and be sure to adjust EC (dilute run off with plain).

This is what im gonna start it up in. Thats a 2liter jug (roughly 1/2 gal). Thanks 9fingerleafs and Campesino for the advice. Mrs. Shotgun says if i can keep it alive till my autos are done , we can invest in a drip system, etc.

I have been working on the post about my drip system and will post it in the next couple of days.
About $135 for my drip system (not including drain system).

I will be looking forward to that. Thanks

So am I...and I'm going to sub to this. You've peeked my curiosity. Perlite is completely inert and can't hold onto nutes or water so good luck.

        Yeah, watching this.

She broke through yesterday, this is what i found this morning. Used nothing but phd water so far to keep it wet. Today i was thinking 1/4 strength nutes until runoff. Ill keep yinz posted.
( i have a 2nd one too in smaller container and its still wearing the seed)

Yes, you are going to have to start providing nutes in all water. It is going to be a really good idea to set EC targets and set the strength of your nutrient solution based on EC - and measure EC of run-off. This is how I would determine fertigation frequency. You need to fertigate often enough that the EC isn't climbing too much in the Perlite due to evaporation.

Haha ..trying a little experiment. It will probably be a failure like lebron

I could live with that level of failure.

You know Campesino this experiment fd up my good plants kinda...i got the 6.5 water jug(soil) mixed up with the 5.5 water for this.. and it caused my good soil plants nitrogen burn, i think, and it stunted them...it was like ten days worth of watering i did.

But i also fd up bad on vegging them. It really discouraged me...long story short those stunted plants got planted outside to grow or die..i started new ones for indoor.. Auto Blue Dream, and i got ffof soil this time.

As far as this perlite plant , i was upset at MY MISTAKE and just pulled it after 5days..i was surprised the roots were long and stretched out. They crawled into perlite pieces etc. Its amazing really and i look forward to trying coco, but i need a successful grow or two before that. Sorry to ramble, and thanks for the link.
