I do DWC and I have 3 plants inside a 3 and a half gal. res. Soil however I understand is quite different I have read most use a 5 gal. pot. I could be wrong and I am sure I am lets ask Green.

depending on the strain, most autos are short and 3 gal. pots will do. I use 3 gal pot and just harvested 150 gr wet from 3 plants and the plants were not root bound.

Depends how big you want your plants, and how many you want to grow.

First grow I grew autos in 2 gal pots. Got 8oz from two plants. Very root bound at harvest.

Second grow I grew 3 autos in 3.5gal pots and got 20oz with no root bound plants.
          Completed auto grows 3

If you want bigger plants 4 will do nicely in a 4x4. If you want more plants but not quite so big then maybe anywhere up to 9 plants. The more you have the more crowded they will be which isn't always a bad thing.

I wouldn't use anything bigger than 3 gallons for an auto.
